PRIME CATTLE: A much larger show of 72 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale. Trade looked sharper overall, with the exception of a few OTMS. Topping the sale was a 741kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby receiving £2248.94 and purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 711kg to £2228.99 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and another from the same home weighing 695kg to £2144.08 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blue crosses to £2242.80 for 727 kgs from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Bazadaise crosses to £2181.63 for 726kg from Messrs McKelvey, Burnside, Lockerbie and an Aberdeen Angus cross to £1957 for 760kgs from Messrs Vance, Low Skeog, Newton Stewart to Alan Jarvis. Top pence per kilo of 313.5 went to a 711 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers sold to a top of £2222.85 for a 730kg British Blue cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin crosses to £2092.97 for 643kgs from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna purchased by Steven Wilson, Butcher Shops Corby Hill and Brampton. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a 645kg Limousin cross to £2009.18 and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold 729kgs Simmental to £1928.21 purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis. Top overall pence per kilo of 325.50p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie with a 549kg Limousin cross purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton and secondly for 643kgs from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of only 64 prime bulls forward saw trade sharpen on the week. Topping the sale at £2302.02 was the heaviest bull of the day weighing 812kgs for a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie. This was purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Bowe, Midtown Farm, Wigton sold another to £2251.13 for 783kgs, Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields also sold 768kgs to £2246.40 and Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie sold two bulls at £2171.61 and £2109.24 for 766 and 744kgs. Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport sold a Parthenais to £2279.88 for 793kgs. Simmentals weighing 709kgs from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart sold to £1811.50 purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top pence per kilo of 292.50 went to the 768kg Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, purchased by Mutch Meats. Black and white bred bulls sold to a top of £1495 for 669kgs Holstein Friesian from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle, Carlisle and £1409.38 for 625kg from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie. Friesian to £1415.57 from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie. Top pence per kilo of 225.5p was achieved twice firstly by Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle for a different Holstein Friesian weighing 608kg and secondly to Messrs Irving, Brectonhall with theirs.

PRIME SHEEP: Another show north of 3000 with more sheep travelling distance to enjoy the trade in Borderway. A total of 3205 prime lambs came forward and sold to an amazing trade throughout to average 277.21p, SQQ 284.44p or £126 per head. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sold a great run of fed lambs to lead the way both per head and per kilo selling heavy Texels to £166 purchased by Mutch Meats. The Fisher family also lead per kilo selling a pen of 41 Texels at £153 (373ppk) to Vivers Scotlamb. All classes sold to extreme rates being some 20ppk up on the week.
