Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME CATTLE: A very similar number of 51 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale of primestock seeing a good trade throughout for all classes.   Less quality was forward on the week, despite this an overall top of £2367.25 was achieved for a 650kg Limousin heifer from Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle being purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Jarman, Brow Top, Workington sold 651kgs to £2027.87 purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  682kg Charolais cross heifers from Messrs Harrington, Hoskett Hill Farm, Carlisle sold to £2083.51 purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo heifer and top overall of 320p went to a Limousin cross from Messrs Little, The Guards, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Steers sold to a day’s top of £2313.30 for an 816kg.  British Blue cross from Messrs Carruthers, Grassgarth, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Other Blue crosses to £2144.98 for 721kgs from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton.  Limousin to £2202.20 and £2184.33 from Bothel Parks weighing 728kg and 715kg both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  A 605kg Friesian from Messrs White, Steele Hall, Hexham sold to £1509.48 purchased by Alan Jarvis.  Top overall pence per kilo steer at 305.5 and 302.5 came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Parks with the aforementioned Limousin crosses.

PRIME BULLS: A larger show of 99 prime bulls forward selling to a great trade throughout.  Topping the sale overall at £2539.76 was an 848kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick sold 882kg to £2535.75.  Messrs Thompson, Townfoot sold 851kgs to £2531.73 and Messrs Scott, Daltonhook, Lockerbie sold 843kgs to £2431.63.  Simmentals sold to £2298.17 from Messrs Lowry, New Steading Farm, Lanark.  Top pence per kilo of £3.00 per kilo went to the Reddings Farm, for their aforementioned Limousin.  Black and white bulls sold to £1589.81 for 721kgs Friesian for Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie.  Holstein Friesians to £1583.51 for 693kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and Fleckviehs to £1535.63 for 675kg from Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor Farm, Carlisle and a top pence per kilo of 253.5p also for a 592kg Fleckvieh from South Lambhill, Longtown and Friesians to 231.5p for 648kgs from Whins Farm, Lockerbie.

CAST COWS: Once again a great entry of 319 cast cows and stock bulls was forward with all classes being a good 10p up on the week. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm sold the top priced Simmental cows for 1045kg, 177.5p, £1854 and 9002kg, 197.5p, £1781 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Idres Roberts. Mr Clive Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Simmental cow for 918kg, 195.5p, £1794 also to Idres Roberts. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold two outstanding cows for 720kg, 231.5p, £1724 for a Limousin cross cow 707kg, 231.5p, £1636 for a British Blue cross cow purchased by Owain Llyr and Messrs Little, Guards sold a Limousin cow for 740kg, 231.5p, £1713 also to Owain Llyr. Mr George Brough, Old Rectory sold Limousin cows for 872kg, 195.5p, £1704 and 785kg, 207.5p, £1628 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Idres Roberts. Messrs Raine, Randalholme sold a Limousin cow for 730kg, 221.5p, £1616 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Robinson & Son, Gelt Hall Farm sold a Shorthorn heifer for 628kg, 247.5p, £1554 to Sean McGimpsey.

All classes of dairy cast cows would be up 10 to 20p on the week. Messrs Nixon, Ribton House sold a great run of Holstein cross cows which topped at 862kg, 175.5p, £1512 and 796kg, 165.5p, £1317 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Harrison, Breckney Hill sold a Holstein cross cow for 880kg, 167.5p, £1474 also to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold a Holstein cross cow for 840kg, 159.5p, £1339 to Charles Kirkpatrick Messrs Marrs & Son, Broomhills sold a Holstein cross heifer for 560kg, 207.5p, £1162 to Alan Jarvis. PRIME SHEEP:  Once again numbers came forward in unbelievable numbers and the auctioneers thank all vendors and purchasers for another fantastic day’s trading which takes 2023s total to 35000 more sheep sold in same period as 2022. Vendors once again were treat with a trade far beyond the reaches of other outlets with some unbelievable returns, with an overall average of 278 and SQQ of 280 for all types represented , Messrs Twentyman Osborne Farm, Wigton stole the show with an incredible run of lambs selling to £205 per head to Lancashire Direct Halal with the run averaging £170 per head , top per kilo was 415p paid for a Dutch texel from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. we saw 11 pens sell over £170, 58 pens sold at £150 - £169, 17 pens selling from 350ppk to 415ppk, and 105 pens sell in excess of 300ppk. Bruce Findlay and Family made their way down from Dundee with an unbelievable run of 107 lambs to average £148.66 per head. Suffolk lambs topped at £150 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown with mules to 270ppkg from Messrs Grieve Whiteside, Hexham Ewes much sharper on the week with the trade of the day belonging to Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth who sold Swaledale ewes to £90 per head.
