PRIME CATTLE: A slightly smaller entry of 49 prime steers and heifers forward with quality very low on the whole undoubtably due to next week’s Christmas show with the best quality kept back for then. Topping the sale at £2289 was a 752kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 697kgs to £2031 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Dent, Elm House sold a British Blue weighing 650kg to £2024. An overall pence per kilo of 327.5p went to a 587kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Steers sold to £2258 for a 732kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 713kg at £2249 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Telford, Edenlin, Carlisle sold steers to £2233 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Charolais to £2088 from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrig, Lockerbie. Top pence per kilo steer was a 713kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake selling at 315p to Pioneer Foods.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 99 prime bulls forward with quality very mixed throughout and plainer on the whole. Trade would look slightly easier but this was mainly due to the overall quality. Topping the sale overall was an 1041kg Charolais from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick achieving £2784 with the same vendors also selling the top price Limousin weighing 857kg selling to £2463.88. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 883kg to £2432 and Messrs Balke, Halfway Well, Penrith to £2356 for 837kg both purchased by Mutch Meats. Simmentals sold to £2288 from Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg, Moffat. Top pence per kilo of 307.5p went to a 708kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by AR Livestock. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold a run of bulls to a top of 305.5p and averaged 301.46p. Dairy bulls peaked at £1549 for a 626kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan to Bowland Food, Preston. Holstein Friesians sold to £1533 for 643kg from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top price per kilo of 247.5p went to the aforementioned Fleckvieh from East Bowhill.

CAST COWS: Once again a great entry of 281 cast cows and stock bull were forward with 21 active buyers around the ring which other markets could only dream of. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 893kg at 237.5p totalling £2120 and 798kg at 227.5p totalling £1815 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 1050kg at 187.5p totalling £1968 and a young Angus for 705kg at 257.5p totalling £1815 to Mr Will Barker and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 775kg at 239.5p totalling £1856 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold two Parthenais for 611kg at 247.5p totalling £1512 and 643kg at 247.5p totalling £1591 both purchased by Owain Llyr.

Messrs Crichton, Limekilns Farm sold Fleckvieh heifers for 634kg at 235.5p totalling £1493 and 573kg at 227.5p totalling £1303 purchased by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 823kg at 173.5p totalling £1427 and 774kg at 179.5p totalling £1389 to Phillip Bowes and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Pollock, Faulds Farm sold Holstein x heifers for 621kg at 215.5p totalling £1338 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Morley, Hadderdale sold a Holstein x heifer for 639kg at 207.5p totalling £1325 to Les Fell. PRIME SHEEP: “Borderway once again proves that it’s the place to sell your lambs with Vendors seeking their highest of expectations”

The weekly sale of prime sheep had slightly less numbers on the week, however once again a trade that won’t be seen anywhere else in the country!

Topping today’s trade at £174 was an outstanding Texel lamb from Messrs Hewson, Parton Farm. Following that at £170 was a Beltex from Messrs Oliver, Walton Woodhead. Messrs Wigham, Hargill House also attained £170, this time for Dutch Texel.

Topping the pence per kilo at 381ppk was a pen of 6 Beltex from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, followed by 374ppk were Dutch Texels from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. Messrs Wigham also sold to 373ppk for a pen of three Dutch Texels.

EWES: “A very similar show on the week, with a brighter trade seen for all classes”

A smaller show of 424 were forward, with a job for all classes ensured a better trade on the week, leaving vendors delighted.

Topping today’s trade at £160 was an outstanding Texel ewe from Messrs Reid, Redhalls, followed by £158 with a Beltex ewe from Messrs Faulder, Ewan Close. Other Beltex’s sold to £145 from Messrs Anderson, Leafield.
