Prime Sheep: On Monday 4th December 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep which incorporated the annual Christmas show and sale which was kindly sponsored by Grange Quarry, Vauxhall and SIG Roofing.

The Christmas show was supported exceptionally well with over 50 pens of lambs plus an extremely large class of individuals forward for this year’s judge Andrew Mutch, Mutch Meats, Oxfordshire to cast his expert eye over. The championship this year was claimed by Messrs Story, Woodhead, Haltwhistle with their exceptional pen of 4 Dutch Texel cross lambs, weighing in at 51kg they later went on to top the sale at £500 (980ppkg) each to the judge. Standing in reserve was Mark Batty and Zoe Hall, Pirntaton Farm with their 4 Texels which sold at £220 to Steven Wilson’s Butchers for his Corby Hill and Brampton shops. The 1st prize single again came from Messrs Story, Woodhead, this lamb sold at £180 to Bowland Food Ltd.

Out with the show another unbelievable entry of 3110 lambs were forward, with all classes notably dearer on the week to average 280p SQQ 284p or £126.66 per head, the over 52kg section averaged an eye watering £152.86 per head with all vendors well rewarded for their produce. Borderway has seen exceptional support this year with us being on course to sell circa 50,000 more lambs than 2022 on behalf of the company we would like to thank all vendors and purchasers who have supported us this year and wish you all the best for the festive season, not forgetting the ewe trade! A smaller entry was forward this week and my word what a trade, averaging £100 per head and selling to £220 for a Texel from Corry McWhirter, Banks Farm with every ewe selling to an inflated trade.
