Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

CLASSY CHIEF TOPS FOR BERRYHOLME

The last Border & Lakeland show and sale of 2023 attracted a world class consignment of cows and heifers from across the north of England and Scotland.  The quality of the animals more than matched the superior quality of the pedigrees in the catalogue giving the packed ringside a super special show to select from.  Trade topped at 3,500gns with 113 milking heifers averaging £2496 with eleven animals selling for or above £3000 and only six milkers selling below £2000.

Finance For Farms sponsored the show with David Wallbank owner of the Tilbank Holstein herd in Lancashire  judging the pre-sale classes.  He selected Wormanby Pepper Judy as his overall champion who was consigned by the Hodgson family from Carlisle.  She was one of the best uddered heifers to sell in the club sale for many a year, she was sired by Delaberge Pepper and sold for 3,100gns to Hugh Howie from the Wellhouse herd in Stranraer.  The Wormanby herd sold another eight cows and heifers to average £2572.   .

Taking the Reserve Champion rosette was a super Red and White daughter of Unstopabull and sold for 3,100gns to Mr Kennedy from near Lockerbie. Kingscaird Unstopabull Marqi Red was bred from seventeen generation of Excellent or Very Goods her dam had sold in the Drointon Elite Heifer sale for 4,600gns.

Topping the sale at 3,500gns was Berryholme Chief Flo who was consigned by the Wright family from Kendal.  Flo was sired by Stantons Chief and was a granddaughter of Berryhome Shottle Flo who was the 2010 National Champion.  Flo was purchased by Baltier Farms near Newton Stewart.  The Berryholme herd sold another three heifers to average over £3115.

The Espland herd sold 12 heifers to average over £2500 and topped at 3,300gns for Espland Fitz Flo who was bought by Baltier Farms near Newton Stewart.  Her Stantons Adorable sister sold for 5,500gns in last year’s Black & White sale, her dam had sold in the Wormanby Youngstock Sale for 4,600gns and is now one of the stars in the Espland herd. The fourth dam in this impressive pedigree is full sister to Berryholme Shottle Flo.

A very classy group of twelve heifers from the Stowbeck herd topped at 3,300gns for Stowbeck Dumledore Pansy who was bought by the Talbot family from near Preston.  She had placed second in the Junior heifer class earlier in the morning and was bred from a super cow family with nine dams all classified in the top grades.  This very milky group averaged over £2700.

The sale finished with twelve yearling heifers from the Harhill Holstein herd owned by Richard Harrinton from near Dalston.  This well bred group of heifers topped at 1,050gns twice for daughters of Claynook Barolo to average £957.

Our first sale of 2024 takes place on Wednesday 3rd January and features 200 dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  This catalogue can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk or can be ordered from the Pedigree Office 01228 406230
