PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry than anticipated of 42 prime bulls seeing the dearest trade for bulls ever seen at Borderway. The day levelled out at £1916 per head inclusive of black and white bulls! Topping the sale overall was a 903kg Limousin from Redpath Farms, Parkside, Kelso selling to £2794. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 931kgs at £2751 both purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Bindloss, Shap Abbey, Penrith sold 872kgs to £2698 to Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold best Simmental cross to £2018 for 702kgs. British Blue crosses to £1969 for a dairy bred 783kg bull from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham to Mutch Meats. Top pence per kilo of 329.5p went to a 748kg Limousin from Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton sold 714kg to 328.5p both to Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie sold to 327.5p for 707kg selling to Mutch Meats. Black and white bulls sold to 636kgs at £1446 for a Holstein Friesian from Smallthwaite Farms, Calthwaite, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods and top pence per kilo of 249.5p went to a 535kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle, Carlisle selling to Morgan Helliwell.

PRIME CATTLE: A decent entry of 31 prime steers & heifers forward for our first day back in 2024 with a great trade seen throughout. Geoff Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton stole the show with the two top prices of £2325.96 & 2303.15 for 728kg & 730kg Limousin cross steers selling to Bowland foods, Preston and Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head, Penrith sold a dairy bred British blue to £2096.54 to Mr Eric Hall. Charolais to £2026.88 for 705kg from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham. Top pence per kilo of 319.5p went to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks selling to Bowland Foods. Heifers sold to £1978.19 for a superb 627kg Limousin cross from Ethan Miller, High Aketon, Wigton selling to R & JP Mulholland Butchers shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport sold 583kgs to £1833.54 selling to R & JP Mullholland Butchers also. Messrs Morton, Church Farm Penrith sold 635kgs to £1825.63 for a Simmental cross to Whittakers Butchers, Arrington. Top price per kilo of 315.5p went to the aforementioned Limousin cross from Ethan Miller, High Aketon.

Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 721kg, 213.5p, £1539 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cows for 863kg, 171.5p, £1480 and 817kg, 175.5p, £1433 both to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Graham & Son, Campfield Limousin sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 842kg, 157.5p, £1326 and 833kg, 157.5, £1311 both to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Blamire, Parkhouse sold a Holstien cross heifer for 709kg, 181.5p, £1286 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Wilson Evening Hill sold a Holstein cross cow for 830kg, 147.5p, £1224 to Morgan Helliwell. Prime Sheep: As Borderway opened up the prime and cast sheep ring for 2024 we were greeted with amazing support with 4572 head forward, we thank you all for your amazing support. 998 cast sheep were forward which represents the largest show in many a moon, this section was headed up by a pair of Texel ewes at £185 consigned by Messrs Rorison, Ayr. A great show of 3574 prime hoggs were brought forward with well fed dry sheep of all weights particularly in demand, this section was topped by 2 vendors both selling at £170, well done to Messrs Forster, East Wharmley and Messrs Laird, Unity Farm. Top price per kilo was 400p this was for a Dutch Texel and sold by Messrs Scott Thirlwall Castle. The top vendor average for the day was claimed by Messrs Harrison who sold 36 hoggs to average £162.94 an all in average of 290p was achieved or £130 per head.
