PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 86 prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby they weren’t quite last weeks roaring trade but not a million miles behind.  Topping the sale overall was an 846kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick achieving £2432.25 selling to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor, Carlisle sold 863kgs to £2394.83.  Simmentals to £2341.71 for 826kgs from Messrs Steele, Red House Farm, Hull.  Messrs Saunders, Maidenlands, Ulverston sold 846kg to £2263.05 both selling to A & D Meats. Aberdeen Angus to £2064.15 for 834kg from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle.  A dairy bred British Blue from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham sold to £2050.73.  Top pence per kilo overall came from Messrs Mitchinson, High Greenhill, Brampton selling 611kgs Limousin cross to 314.50 to Jewitt Meats.  Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold 694kgs to 310.50 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston,

Dairy bred bulls topped at £1814.59 for a 713kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitts Meats.  Friesian to £1712.62 for 743kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie. Holsteins to £1553.37 for 671kgs from Messrs Story, Blackrigg, Longtown.  Norwegian Reds to £1460.77 for 631kgs from Messrs Little, Kirkbride, Wigton and Ayrshires to £1422.03 for 642kgs from Messrs McGarva, Horseclose, Annan.  Top pence per kilo of 255.5p went to a 696kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown.  Friesians to 248.5p for 672kgs from Whins Farm Lockerbie.

PRIME CATTLE: A very mixed entry of 53 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby a lack of quality was evident.  Trade would be on a par if not dearer than last week.  Topping the sale overall was an 867kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries selling to £2301.89 purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie sold 746kg to £2286.49 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 738kg to £2276.73 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold 735kgs to £2230.73 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  A 34 month old Charolais cross, weighing 805kgs from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton sold to £1952.13 to Mr Les Fell.  Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill sold to £1877.76 to Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo steer and top overall was a 523kg Limousin cross from Messrs Sission, Kelbarrow, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods.

Heifers topped at £1860.83 for a 645kg Limousin cross from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland purchased by Hartshead Meats.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton sold 627kgs to £1840.35 to Mr Eric Hall.  Blonde Crosses from Messrs Mitchel, Grassknop, Penrith sold to £1853.13 for 525kg.  Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith sold 655kgs Simmental cross to £1752.23.  Holstein Friesians to £1632.58 for 665kg from Messrs Jefferson, High Pow, Wigton.  Top pence per kilo of 304.50 went to a 578kg Limousin cross from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, purchased by Bowland Foods.

CAST COWS: An increased entry of 354 cast cows were forward with an increased ringside of buyers ensuring a trade that left vendors highly delighted. Mr Edward Dean, Kirkhouse Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 847kg, 235.5p, £1994 to Owain Llyr. Mr Blanc, Long Garth Farm run of cows topped at 836kg, 235.5p, £1968 and 650kg, 239.5p, £1556 for a Limousin cross purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. D A Harrison, High House Farm run of cows topped at 913kg, 211.5p, £1931 for a Charolais cow to Scotbeef and 812kg, 225.5, £1831 for a Limousin cross selling to Charles Kirkpatrick. Prime Sheep: On Monday 8^th January 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep. A fall in numbers made sure the trade defied the rumors as a flying trade was witnessed throughout with an overall average of 290p, SQQ 294p being achieved with a plainer show overall. Young George Robinson, Pelutho Park led the day trade with his first day of asking at £180 purchased by Yorkshire Halal Ltd. Top pence per kilo at 400p was a pen of 4 Texel cross lambs from Messrs Wilson, Meadow Farm who sold 40kg lambs at £160 to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. Ewes were £5.8 ahead of last week’s rate selling to a top of £168 for a Beltex from Messrs Shirvinton, Woodbank Farm
