PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 94 prime bulls forward selling to a 5p deduction on the week for best bulls with all others every bit as dear.  Topping the sale overall was 1040kg Charolais from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar to £2823.60 to A & D Meats.  Next best was a Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat weighing 878kgs and achieving £2612.05.  Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie to £2314.55 for 778kg Limousin cross.  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick to £2278.85 for 766kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston.  First cross British Blue from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan to £1840.34 for 668kgs selling to Bowland Foods.

Top overall pence per kilo of 314.5p went to a 630kg Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods. Black and whites sold to £1546.97 for 711kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Friesians from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie to £1613.56 for 697kg.  Top pence per kilo of 234.50p went to a 559kg Friesian for Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham selling to Morgan Helliwell.

PRIME CATTLE: A much larger show of 71 prime steers and heifers forward on the week with a good trade witnessed throughout, quality was very mixed throughout but just goes to show there’s nothing we cant sell.  Best cattle shone through with the top overall price coming from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont with a 758kg Limousin cross heifer achieving £2209.57 selling to Mr Eric Hall.   Next best a 654kg British Blue from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle receiving £1939, a 608kg Charolais from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Penrith sold to £1760.16 and purchased by A & D Meats.  Top pence per kilo heifer was a 548kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton at 311.5 selling to Bowland Foods, three Limousin crosses made 309.50, two from Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna and one from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie.   Steers sold to £2200.55 for a 711kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 700kgs to £2187.50 a day’s top overall pence per kilo of 312.50 went to this very same animal from The Lake and was purchased by Pioneer Foods.  A first cross British Blue steer from new vendors Messrs Dunlop, Balminnoch Farm, Maybole sold to 275.5 for 610kgs purchased by Hartshead Meats

Messrs Carr, Little Bavington Farm, Capheaton sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 919kg, 239.5, £2201 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 1034kg 199.5 £2062 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Darling, & Sons, Stitchill House Farm sold a British Blue cow for 844kg, 233.5 £1970 to Charles Kirpatrick.  Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm sold the top price Blonde cow for 798kg 223.5 £1783 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dunlop & Son, Balminnoch Farm, sold a British Blue x heifer for 558kg 247.5 £1381 to Alan Jarvis.   Pearsby Hall Farming sold a young Angus for 598kg, 237.5 £1420 to Alan Jarvis.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 15^th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep, another wonderful show of 2911 head were forward which is again well over 1200 ahead of last years weekly rate with sheep travelling long distances and being well rewarded with a trade far beyond the reach of others, an overall average of 291p was achieved for a very commercial and heavy show, well meated lambs of all weights regularly sailed above and beyond 300ppkg leaving vendors elated, top price this week was £182 this was achieved for a Dutch Texel from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown closely followed by Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke with his Texels topping at £180. Top per kilo at a fantastic 441p was a great pen of export lambs from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown.

Cast Ewes: The sale of ewes was slightly down in numbers but well a head of last weeks trade averaging a magical £110, selling to £190 for a Texel consigned by Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield. Mules averaged £101.94 to a top of £140 from Messrs Milbourn, Walby Grange. Hill ewes were a flier with Swaledales to £88 from Messrs Blenkharn, Westgarth Hill and Herdwicks to £78 from Messrs Johnston, Scotby Ghyll.
