PRIME BULLS:

A much smaller entry then anticipated of 62 prime bulls forward due to this nuisance storm, despite this just like all other sections anyone who made it to Borderway were well rewarded with a flying trade seen throughout. Topping the sale overall was Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith’s run of 6 Limousin bulls which weighed 891kgs and peaked at £2846.75, the whole run of bulls averaged a whopping £2633.01, 312.89ppk and 841kgs. Simmentals sold to £2266.95 for 762kgs from Messrs Dyet, East Merkland, Strathaven purchased by A & D Meat. Aberdeen Angus bulls weighing 860kgs from Palmallet Farm, Whithorn, Newton Stewart sold to £1999.50 to Mr Alan Jarvis. First cross British Blues to £1978.54 for 793kgs from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top overall pence per kilo of 319.50p was achieved twice by Clifton Moor for bulls weighing 891 & 847kgs. Messrs Stamper, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth sold 718kgs to 310.5ppk and Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie sold the best Charolais crosses to 313.5p for 565kgs.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1910.81 for 717kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown for a Fleckvieh. Holstein Friesians from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall, Carlisle sold to £1624.50 for 684kgs. Top price per kilo of 266.5p went to the aforementioned Fleckvieh from South Lambhill. Holstein Friesians from Messrs Walker, Barwinnoch Farm, Newton Stewart to 238.5p for 533kgs to Bowland Foods and Friesians sold to 229.5p for 660kgs from South Lambhill, Longtown again to Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A good entry of 46 prime steers and heifers forward considering the destruction left by Storm Isha and the disruption caused on the roads locally, despite this the vendors that braved the weather were well rewarded for their efforts.  Trade was marvellous throughout with all classes very easily sold to the 10 active buyers.  Topping the sale overall was a 765kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle at £2375.33 and another for the same home to £2329.25 for 770kgs.  Messrs Marrs, Croft Farm, Carlisle sold a 746kg first cross British Blue to £2144.75.  A 700 kg Belted Galloway for Messrs MacGillvray, Carlisle sold to £1781.50.  Top pence per kilo was one of the aforementioned from The Lake at 310.5p to Mr Eric Hall.

Heifers sold to £1946.28 for a 613kg Limousin from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland sold next best to £1931.28 for 624kg.  Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle sold a 703kg Aberdeen Angus to £1810.23, top overall pence per kilo of 323.50 went to a lovely 596kg Limousin of Linden House, Penrith selling to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton, the same vendors also sold 613kgs to 317.50 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 214 cast cows and stock bulls was forward to the usual large ring side of buyers which ensured all classes were 20p up on the week. Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill sold the top priced Limousin cow for 790kgs at 790kg at 239.5p totalling £1892 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold two Limousin cows for 776kg at 241.5p totalling £1874 and 802kg at 233.5p totalling £1872 bought by Owain Llyr and Idres Roberts. Messrs Spence, North Corrielaw’s run of cows topped at 841kg at 201.5p totalling £1694 for a Beef Shorthorn to Idres Roberts. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close sold a Limousin cow for 693kg at 239.5p totalling £1659 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 767kg at 207.5p totalling £1591 to Idres Roberts. Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh sold a Limousin x cow for 738kg at 207.5p totalling £1531 also to Idres Roberts. Messrs Rogerson & Son, Wardpark sold a Limousin x heifer for 580kg at 241.5p totalling £1400 to Alan Jarvis.

168 dairy cast cows were forward with trade for all classes being 20p up on the week. Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands sold a Holstein x heifer for 716kg at 229.5p totalling £1643 to Les Fell. Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor sold a Fleckvieh x heifer for 619kg at 235.5p totalling £1457 also to Les Fell. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 872kg at 175.5p totalling £1530 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Weightman, Highwood Nook. Holstein x cows topped at 907kg at 165.5p totalling £1501 and 805kg at 175.5p totalling £1412 both bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 839kg at 169.5p totalling £1422 and a Holstein heifer for 637kg at 215.5p totalling £1372 bought by Micheal Helliwell and Les Fell. Messrs Ferguson & Co, Knockeffrick sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 517kg at 227.5p totalling £1176 to Brian Capper. Blencogo House Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 623kg at 207.5p totalling £1292 to Alan Jarvis.

Messrs Airey, Brownchesters sold a Limousin stock bull for 968kg at 197.5p totalling £1911 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Sheep: Vendors who battled the elements and horrific travelling conditions were rewarded with a barn storming trade and the average lifting over 25ppk on the week with all weights and grades in red hot demand, an overall average of 315p SQQ 325p was achieved.   

Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Bridge of Dee sold a great run of hoggs selling to a sale topping £188 for heavy Texels selling to Mutch Meats, Oxfordshire. Messrs MacTaggart sold 158 hoggs to average £174.46 including Texels, Suffolks and Mules.  Hot on Jock’s heels was Messrs MacTaggart, Station Yard, Castle Douglas who sold heavies to £187 for Texels again to Mutch Meats Ltd.  Messrs Nelson, Braithwaite sold the leading price per kilo of 442p for a pen of 5 selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.
