Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 11th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A great show of 362 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1776 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger entry of 90 prime bulls forward with well fleshed bulls very good to sell but plainer leaner black and whites harder to cash. Top overall was a marvellous Limousin from Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries receiving £1797 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold another to £1732 and Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold one at £1712 all purchased by Bowland Foods. Simmentals sold to £1732 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and British Blue crosses from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold to £1420 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. The same vendor also sold top overall pence per kilo of 237.5p for one of their Limousin crosses. Dairy bulls peaked at £1235 from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton for a Friesian purchased by Jewitt Meats this same vendor also sold top pence per kilo of 177.5p for another Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: A small select show of only 30 prime steers and heifers forward with a good trade achieved throughout. Top overall came from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle for an exceptional Limousin cross attaining £1775 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another two to £1757 and £1749 and top pence per kilo of 237.5p was also attained by Messrs Bowe for one of the aforementioned steers. Heifers peaked at £1642 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle. More could have been sold to vendors’ advantage. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good show of 258 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to over 24 buyers which insured a flying trade for all classes. Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm’s run of cows topped at 701kg at 218.5p totalling £1551 for a 9-year-old British Blue cow bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold two Limousin cows for 739kg at 205.5p totalling £1518 and 698kg at 206.5p totalling £1441 both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm sold a Limousin cow for 837kg at 170.5p totalling £1427 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Tom Story, Greenburn sold the top price Charolais cow for 840kg at 165.5p totalling £1390 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Mattinson, Green Farm sold a British Blue cow for 661kg at 187.5p totalling £1239 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Bowe, Midtown Farm sold a Limousin cow for 666kg at 183.5p totalling £1222 to Jewitts Meats. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House sold a Limousin cow for 769kg at 172.5p totalling £1326 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of black and white cows would be the dearest seen for some time with Messrs Story, Blackrigg selling a Holstein x heifer for 777kg at 165.5p totalling £1285 bought by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 972kg at 129.5p totalling £1258 bought by Dovecote Park. Messrs Maxell, North Doddington’s run of Friesian cows topped at 669kg at 167.5p totalling £1120 to Sean McGimpsey. Hardgrove Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 819kg at 135.5p totalling £1109 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Moffat, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 686kg at 160.5p totalling £1101 to Les Fell. Messrs Donald & Son, Lamonby Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 845kg at 129.5p totalling £1094 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Beaty, Newton Fields’ run of Holstein x cows topped at 855kg at 127.5p totalling £1090 also to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrison, Woodhouse sold a Holstein x cow for 825kg at 129.5p totalling £1068 to Dovecote Park.

CAST BULLS: 9 stock bulls were on offer. Messrs Maw & Sons, Beaumont House sold a Blue stock bull for 1178kg at 141.5p totalling £1666 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Holliday, Newbampton Farm sold a British Blue stock bull for 1068kg at 146.5p totalling £1564 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hodgson, Drumburgh Castle Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1197kg at 127.5p totalling £1526 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Todhunter, Greyrigg sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1059kg at 137.5p totalling £1456 to Jewitts Meats. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1009kg at 142.5p totalling £1437 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime hoggs and cast sheep saw an increased entry of 1776 head. Numbers continue to be a struggle to source and with this the price continues to soar with returns seeing unprecedented levels for the time of year. An overall average of 262p which translates to £116.21 per head. 23 lots of sheep sold in excess of £140 with 71 lots over £130, countless sheep of all type sailed past £120 with ease. Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill brought forward some fabulous butchers lambs to top the sale at £154 with others at £150 and £148 to average £150 a head.
Beltex lambs topped per kilo at 341.5p for a pen from Messrs Oliver, Walton Woodhead selling at £140 a head. Suffolks peaked at £130 from Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith and to 270pph from Adam & Amy Bell, Thethwaite, Wigton. Mules sold to £124 for a pen from Messrs Story, Jacksonrigg, Longtown and to 260.7p from Messrs Armstrong, Shankfield Head, Longtown. Hill lambs sold to £120 & 275.9p for Blackies from MJ Dixon, Stubbs Farm, Hexham

CAST SHEEP: 140 cast ewes were forward at the weekly sale where trade was simply on fire with a whole sale average of £100.50.  Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall’s run of 26 ewes sold to average £138.50, the same home topped at £155 for a pen of 7 cracking Texel x ewes.  Mules sold to £106 from Messrs James, Midtodhills. Blackies sold to £88 from Messrs Armstrong, Lanehead and Messrs Morton, Church Farm sold a pen of 13 Swaledales to £77.
