PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 86 prime bulls forward and it has to be said one of the plainest run of bulls seen for some time with only a handful of the top end available. Despite this all classes were a flying trade even with the higher entry of dairy bulls. Topping the sale overall was a 1074kg Limousin for Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat attaining £3377.73. Next best was a 679kg Limousin from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan selling to £2237.31 to A & D Meats. An OTM Simmental from Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown to £2258.41 for 838kgs and 679kgs from Messrs Brown, Millmoor, Lanark to £1999.66. Top overall pence per kilo of 329.5p from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk.
Dairy bulls sold to a day’s top of £1877.00 for 707kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to Bowland Foods. Friesian to £1820.59 for 757kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie and Holsteins to £1772.68 for 728kg from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham to Jewitts Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo of 266.5p went to a Montbeliarde from Seymour Farms, Wigton while 707kg Fleckviehs from South Lambhill sold to 265.0p. Holsteins Friesian to 247.5 for 631kg from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller show of 57 prime steers and heifers forward on the week with quality mixed throughout. There was something for everyone’s needs. Topping the sale overall was a 798kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie achieving £2358.09 to Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 724kgs to £2305.94 and 725kgs to £2265.63 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake sold 721kgs to £2253.13 and 706kgs to £2220.37 to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton. Messrs Nicholson also sold top British Blue to £2238.38 for 705kgs to A & D Meats. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks attained top price per kilo of 318.5p for their 724kgs Limousin cross and 318.5p for 678kgs also. Heifers sold to £1980.15 for 614kgs from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop. Prime Sheep: Another fantastic turnout of 3400 prime & cast sheep this week which included a record 1057 cast ewes and rams and 2343 prime hoggs. These included sheep from Fraserburgh in the North and Ireland in the west with several new consigners joined by a strong company of local vendors, all of which were treated to the sale of the season. A very commercial offering of all weights and breeds with a small percentage of the high pence per kilo types returning an average of 325p with an SQQ of 331p, some 21ppk ahead of the national average this week. Ewes too an absolute flier with some others unable to be serviced with trade as strong as ever despite the record numbers found. Leading the hogg trade this week at £188 was a pen of heavy texels shown by Mactaggart Bros, Station Yard, Castle Douglas purchased by Mutch Meats, Oxfordshire. A pen of Beltex hoggs from Jamie Walker, High Mindork, Newton Stewart led the pence per kilo Rouge at 424p selling to Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Currie, Dumfries led the consigner average selling a run of Beltex hoggs to average £179.5 per head. Suffolk hoggs sold to £179 for a pen of heavies from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Bridge of Dee and to 342ppk for a pen from Buninver Road, County Tyrone. Mules to a magical £170 for heavies from Moir Livestock, Caithness and 315.6p from Messrs Fettes, Braes of Enzie. A small sample of hill hoggs sold to 335p for Cheviots from Gordon Cartmell, The Hollands or £150 for Blackies from Ballymena Road Ballyclare. Ewes peaked at £203 for Texels from new vendors Messrs Hindmarsh, Warkshaugh, Hexham.
Beltex sold to £200 from Messrs Currie, Dumfries, Mules topped at £121 from Messrs Foster, Parkside, Hexham Cheviots sold to £130 from Messrs Moir, Caithness with Horned sheep peaking at £96 from Messrs Bell, Lockerbie and swales at £88 from Messrs Morton Penrith.
