Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 18th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 550 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1955 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A very good entry of 93 prime bulls were forward, with the very best and plainer cattle both dearer on the week. Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Cockburn, Kingside Farm, Edinburgh, achieving £2003.65 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousins to £1982.15 from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton and purchased by Fraser Butchers, Stranraer. Others from the same home selling to £1919.01 purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Charolais sold to £1756.10 from Messrs MacGregor, Ltd, Allanfauld, Glasgow purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top overall pence per kilo of 235.5ppk was attained twice, both by Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith and purchased by Fraser Butchers and Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.

Dairy Bred bulls were forward carrying more flesh on the week and sold to £1259.25 for a British Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillend, Canonbie, purchased by Capper Farming. Top pence per kilo of 177.5ppk from Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 44 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a good trade being attained throughout. Better quality sorts sold best as usual, peaking at £1721.72 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses to £1635.33 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by WE Farlie Ltd, Letham. Top overall pence per kilo of 236.5ppk was paid to Messrs Bowe, for the aforementioned Limousin steer. British Blues to 232.5ppk from Messrs Brough, How Gill, Wigton, purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.

Heifers seen a day’s top of £1608 for a quality Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle sold to £1543.44 purchased by Craig Butchers. Charolais to £1581.51 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo of 233.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Airey, The Close, and secondly by Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: The largest show of 405 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer this week to the usual large demand from buyers ensuring a great trade throughout.

Messrs Forrester, Down By Rigg, sold the top priced British Blue cow for 854kg, 228.5ppk or £1951 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Duerden, Killawick Grange sold the top priced Parthenais cow for 925kg, 191.5ppk or £1771 purchased by Mr David Holmes. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm, sold the top priced Limosuin cow for 822kg, 205.5ppk or £1689 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Airey, The Close run of cows topped at 875kg, 188.5ppk or £1649 for a Limosuin cross purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm run of Limosuin cows topped at 788kg, 199.5ppk or £1572 purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Bell, Fitz Farm cows topped at 865kg, 177.5ppk or £1535 for a Limousin cross purchased by David Holmes. Messrs Carr, Little Bavington Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 211.5ppk and 197.5ppk to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall Farm, sold a young Limousin cross for 193.5ppk to Wesley Gracey. Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk sold a Luing cross cow for 189.5ppk to Wesley Gracey.

A large show of Black and White cows were on offer with all buyers keen to buy, resulting in in a great trade for all classes. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 701kg, 168.5ppk or £1203 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison, Hazel Head sold a Holstein cross cow for 869kg, 135.5ppk or £1177 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Byres & Son, Woodslee sold a Holstein cross for 679kg, 172.5ppk or £1171 to Les Fell. Messrs Gorst, Low Wood Dairy sold a Norwegian Red for 859kg, 133.5ppk or £1146 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Chester, Brownrigg Hall Farms sold a Holstein cross cow for 866kg, 130.5ppk or £1130 to Dovecote Park. PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw an entry of 1955 head forward.

A plainer show of sheep saw a slight slip in trade however, best end exporters and heavies maintained last weeks extreme rates.

Topping the trade at £149 was Willie Laird, Unity Farm, Brampton who brought forward another great run of lambs to average £129.40.

Top per kilo was 350p for a marvellous pen of 40kg Beltex hoggs from A & A Little, Hollands, Penton whose run averaged 308.59ppk.

M/s Toppin, Bascodyke sold a great run of hoggs to average a fabulous £142.35 a head.

M/s Malling, The Hill sold Texels to £147 for a pen of 6 heavies to average £140.82

M/s Fell, Stanger Hill sold a run of middleweight Texel x Mule lambs to a top of £133 to average £121.18

Hill sheep to a top of £121 for Scotch Blackfaced from M/s Dixon, Stobbs who also topped at 271.9p

North of England Mules to £119 from M/s Bowman, Brampton Fell and to 250p for a pen of 18 from M/s Wilson, Old Church.
