Kirkby Stephen ' Kirkby Classic' Show potential Show & Sale

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their Annual Kirkby Classic Prize sale of potential show and store cattle, when a catalogue entry of 498 cattle were on offer.

The sale topped at £3200 for the first placed unhaltered British Blue heifer, a nine month old from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Carnforth and was purchased by Messrs Park, Kirklands Farm, Ireton.

The judging of the Kirkby Classic was in the capable hands of cattle show man Mr Paul Tippett, Shropshire who had the difficult task of judging the fantastic entry of show cattle put before him.

The first placed rosette was awarded to a classy 9 month old haltered Limousin steer consigned by Messrs Laird & Son, Sunnyside and Carvello, Ayrshire which went on to sell to £3000 to Messrs Naylor, Kirk Langley.

Taking Reserve Champion the second placed haltered Limousin steer, a 8 month old from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle and sold for £2700 to Messrs Laws, Leyburn.

The 61 show cattle sold to average £2218.18.

Also selling to £3000 was the first placed haltered British blue heifer, a 7 month old from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree Farm, Carnforth selling to Messrs Parkin, Scunthorpe.

Messrs Wilkinson, Ivy Farm, Leyburn sold a 7 month old Limousin heifer making £2800 to Messrs Naylor, Kirk Langley.

In the store cattle Steers averaged £1488.08 (up £262.70 on the year), heifers averaged £1423.75 (up £245.46 on the year). Overall average was £1457.23 (up £250.38 on the year) for 69 more cattle sold.

The Kirkby Classic is ever growing in popularity year on year with an increased entry and unrivalled packed ringside of buyers in a attendance for show cattle and all classes of commercial store cattle from as far afield as Ayrshire and Leicestershire.

Store cattle were said to be the dearest trade buyers have seen anywhere so far!

Messrs Sedley, Low Bank House sold a 9 month British Blue steers to make £1780

Messrs Hardisty, How Hall sold 8 month Limousin cross heifers to £1700

With plenty of 8 to 12 month old good quality steers and heifers regularly selling between £1600 & £1780

23 store cattle sold between £2000 and £3200, 120 cattle sold between £1600 and £3200 with a majority of these been 8 to 12 months old.
