Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when a show of 2,556 sheep were forward consisting of 2010 prime hoggs and 546 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hoggs at £146.50 were a pair of 43kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith which were bought by Vivers Scotlamb.

Topping at 360p/kg were a pen of 38kg Beltex cross hoggs which sold for £136.80 from Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill, Soulby and were purchased by West Scottish Lamb.

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon sold a pen of 5 35kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £124.30 (355.1p/kg) selling to Vivers Scotlamb.

Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie sold a pen of 40kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £138.80 (347p/kg) selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats.

Messrs Dickinson Kirkbarrow sold 48kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £141 selling to Dowdings Butchers Appleby, with another pen of four 53kg hoggs from this home selling for £140 to J Birkbeck.

The whole consignment of 34 hoggs from Kirkbarrow Hall sold to average 49kg £133.08 (271.6p/kg)

Messrs Greensit, Friars Garth, Northallerton sold a pen of 10 53kg Texel cross hoggs to make £138 (260.4p/kg) selling to West Scottish Lamb.

Mule hoggs topped at £126 for a pen of 58kg from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Distington which were bought by A Slack.

Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick sold a pen of 20 54kg Mule hoggs to make £119.30 selling to West Scottish Lamb.

Messrs Birkbeck, Castle Hill sold a pen of 45kg Mules to make £110 (244.4p/kg) selling to Lancashire Direct Halal.

Messrs Deeming, Warwickshire sold two pens of 32 Texel cross Mule hoggs weighing 43kg to make £114.30 (266p/kg).

A smaller show of generally planer hoggs were forward with many breeders clearing out of last seasons crop and a lack of any runs of good meated fed hoggs been forward with the strong trade coming several weeks too early for the feeding men to start selling.

Cast Bluefaced Leicester rams sold to £148 from Kilnstown Farms, Carlisle.

Beltex cross ewes sold to £140 from Keepwick Farm, Hexham.

Swaledale ewes sold to £77.50 for a pen of 29 from Messrs Akrigg, Manor Farm, Skipton which were bought by Yorkshire Halal Meats.

Another pen of 21 Swaledale ewes sold to make £76.50 from Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm, Haltwhistle which were bought by D Towers.

A Swaledale prime hogg was donated by Alan Birbeck, Pennine View, Nateby to be sold for charity with the proceeds being split between MacMillan Nurses and Cancer Research UK. The hogg was sold in the ring for £128 purchased by James Blekhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal Meats this figure was double by Harrison & Hetherington. Several other donations came forward resulted in a total of £856 been raised been raised for the two charities.
