PRIME BULLS: A great offering of 92 prime bulls forward seeing a lot less flesh on offer throughout. Trade would be easier on the week on the whole. Topping the sale overall was a 795kg Limousin cross from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries at £2555.93 not far behind a 1004kg was a 33 month old Limousin from Messrs Struthers, Collielaw Farm, Carluke and Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Melmerby, Penrith sold 790kgs to £2429.25 a Saler weighing 1026kgs from Messrs Orr Lawhead, West Lothian sold to £2169.99 and 1128kgs Aberdeen Angus to £2115 from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle. Simmentals to £1893.9 for 708kgs from Messrs Trafford, Springfield, Cockermouth. British Blues to £1891.05 for 611kgs from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne, Wigton. Top Overall pence per kilo of 321.5p went to the aforementioned Cleughbrae Farm, Dumfries. Dairy bulls very easily sold once again with a day’s best of £1632.65 for a 657kg Friesian form Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton selling to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Fleckviehs to £1586.2 for 616kgs from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan and purchased by Bowland Foods. Best Holstien Friesian was 1624kg bull from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton receiving £1538.16. top price per kilo overall of 257.5p went to East Bowhill’s Fleckviehs while Friesians sold to 248.5p from Osborne Farms, Wigton. 246.5p for Montbeliarde from Seymour Farms, Wigton and the same price for Holstein/ Friesians from High House, Wigton

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller entry of only 37 prime steers and heifers forward seeing the trade on fire for all shapes and sizes, quality and weights shining through this week with a day’s overall top of £2432.96 for a 799kg Charolais cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egrement selling to Mr Eric Hall. Limousins from the same home sold to £2287.62 for 716kg to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill & Brampton. A 561kg British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold to £1820.45 and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Top pence per kilo heifer and top overall on the day went to a 523kg British Blue cross from Messrs Crowther, Spittalriddinghill, Annan achieving 335.5p and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold 507kg Limousin crosses to 325.5p and purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers.

Steers overall top was only pennies behind the day’s sale leading heifer with £2432.43 being achieved by Messrs Gate, Hollins, Cockermouth for a 858kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries sold 778kgs to £2361.23 to A & D Meats. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 739kgs to £2309.38 and Messrs Harrison Aldermanseat, Gretna sold 841kg Charolais crosses to £2249.68 to Mr Eric Hall and the same vendor sold a shapier 791kg Charolais to £2234.58 to A & D Meats. Top pence per kilo steer of 316.5p went to Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm, Penrith for a 638kg Limousin cross purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Charolais cross steers sold to 311.5p for 658kgs from Messrs Crowther, Spittalriddinghill, Annan purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: Once again a large show of 337 cast cows and stock bulls forward with cows reaching new heights that other markets could only dream of. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 928kg at 334.5p totalling £3104 and 939kg at 314.5p totalling £2953 purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Little, The Guards sold a British Blue x cow for 822kg at 269.5p totalling £2215 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lindsay, Kepscaith Farm sold two Limousin cows for 865kg at 239.5p totalling £2071 and 868kg at 221.5p totalling £1922 to Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s run of cows topped at 762kgs at 257.5p totalling £1962 for a Limousin x to Charles Kirkpatrick and 726kg at 235.5p totalling £1709 for British Blue x to Micheal Helliwell. Prime Sheep: On Monday 12th February H&H enjoyed another fabulous days trading in the sheep ring at Borderway , 2956 hoggs were joined by 540 cast sheep in what would turn out to be the trade of the season so far, all classes sold to exceptional rates with ewes selling to £300 and hoggs to £216 or 470ppkg, an overall sale average of 332ppk or 339p SQQ with a price per head average of £147.32 saw a great return for vendors in a sale that was dominated by Heavy lambs along with a big show of first cross, mule and hill types, away from the headline acts a large show of mule and hill sheep averaged well in excess of 320p with maybe the trade of the day being reserved for a pen of 38kg Swaledale wether lambs from Messrs Huddleston, Round Meadows Hexham which sold for £121 or 318.4ppkg. Sheep were forward in large number from both local vendors along with further travelled sheep from Ireland, the Isle of Man and Aberdeenshire showing the word of the Borderway trades is really spreading Topping the hoggs at £216 was Mr H Currie, Eden Dales for a Blue Texel which was purchased by Mutch Meats Topping per kilo was the young Graham Brothers from Laws Hall who sold Beltex hoggs to £4.70 a kilo purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd
