PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 77 Prime bulls forward seeing trade sharper on the week for all classes.
Topping the sale overall was a 931kg Limousin selling to £3011.79 from Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 794kgs to £2552.71 and Messrs James, Blaencowin, Wales, sold 762kgs to £2495.55 both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blues to £2342.75 for 711kgs for Messrs Carr, Little Bavington, Newcastle. This bull was also top overall pence per kilo of 329.50 selling to Mutch Meats. Aberdeen Angus to £1963.33 for 863kg from Messrs Taylor, Stelling South, Newcastle.
Dairy bred bulls sold to £1861.20 for a 720kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown selling to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Friesians to £1729 for 760kgs from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton. Holstein Friesians to £1619.68 for 629kgs from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 269.50 was received by Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan for a 575kg Fleckvieh. Friesians to 259.00 for 570kgs from Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham and Holstein Friesians to 257.50 for 629kgs of Ratten Castle, Carlisle

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another steaming trade in Borderway’s weekly prime stock steer and heifer sale with 57 cattle on offer and a great mixture seen throughout. Topping the sale jointly at £2319.90 was firstly a 740kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and secondly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling the exact same weight, both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wigham, Coldshields, Haltwhistle sold 707kg to £2244.73 to A & D Meats. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold a dairy bred to £2212.27 for 803kgs to Mr Eric Hall. Beef Shorthorn crosses to £1957.62 for 708kgs from Messrs Bland, Flatt, Brampton purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop at Corby Hill and Brampton. Top overall pence per kilo steer was a 687kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle achieving 325.50 to A & D Meats.
Heifers sold to £2274.21 for a 703kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle. Charolais cross heifers to £2239.83 for 738kgs from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and pure Galloways weighing 620kg to £1683.30 all of the above purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop Corby Hill and Brampton. Top overall pence per kilo of 330.50 went to a marvellous 598kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Harrot Hill, Cockermouth. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald also sold a 657kg Charolais cross to 327.5 both purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a good entry of 300 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with trade being good to sell throughout.
Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold two British Blue cows for 992kg, 294.5ppk or £2921 and to 817kg, 284.5ppk or £2324 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold the top priced Limousin cows for 1076kg, 211.5ppk or £2275 and to 911kg, 219.5ppk or £1999 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.
Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm, run of cows topped at 698kg, 265.5ppk or £1853 for an Aberdeen Angus heifer to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Clark, West Glengyre Farm sold two Charolais cows for 623kg, 253.5ppk or £1579 and to 647kg, 245.5ppk or £1588 both to Jewitts Meats.
A total of 178 Dairy cast cows were forward, selling to 10p up on the week for all classes. Messrs Harrison, Dundraw Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 733kg, 225.5ppk or £1652 for a Holstein cross heifer to Les Fell. Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 861kg, 179.5ppk or £1545 to Les Fell. Messrs Wilson, Southview sold Holstein cross heifers for 654kg, 231.5ppk or £1514 and to 672kg, 223.5ppk or £1501 both to Les Fell. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 822kg, 175.5ppk or £1442 to Philip Bowes.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 19th February 2023 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted another great entry of 2603 hoggs and 537 ewes and tups. This weeks trade for all classes of stock was quite latterly off the scale, new buyers were in attendance once more which pushed our already UK leading average of last week to another lead. The cast sheep set the trend posting an average of £120.97 with 55% of the entry being Horned/Hill ewes. 10 ewes broke the £300 barrier to a top of £330 for pure texels from Ballymena Road who sold others to £310 and £300, local consignors Alan Mounsey, Wardhall Guards sold 2 lots of ewes at £310 per head all being purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, Ossett. Cheviot ewes sold to £168 to lead the hill section from Messrs Craik, Bankswood, Dumfries with horned ewes to £114 for Blackies from Ballymena Road. More cast sheep required weekly. Following on from the ewes was a fantastic entry of 2603 prime hoggs which posted an overall average of 338pph and a SQQ of 345.9p which translated to £149.03 per head, a return which has yet to be seen by other outlets this season. Leading the wat at £232 were Blue Texel hoggs from Mandy Graham, Hillend Farm, Annan who sold others to £214, £210 and £202 with the 8 from this home averaging £204.25 selling to Lancashire Direct Halal. Topping per kilo at a magival 500p was a single Beltex lamb from Messrs Little, Hollands, Preston which sold at 39kg, £195 to Bowland Foods Ltd. Mule lambs sold to £169 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown or 323.8p from Messrs Little Hollands. Hill breeds to £160 for Cheviots, £157 for Blackies and £138 for Swaledales or 347.2p Cheviots, 343p Blackfaced and 324p for Swaledales.
