RHAPSODY TOPS AT SIX

HEIFERS AVERAGE £2594

Quality was in abundance at the February Border & Lakeland sale that included 130 milking cows and heifers many bred from exceptional pedigrees.  Trade topped at 6,000gns for a second lactation cow with the overall average for heifers coming to £2594 with only two heifers selling for less than £2000.  The Newcroft Holstein herd sold 70 yearling heifers topping at 1,900gns to average £1230.

Finance For Farms sponsored the show and John Unsworth from Lancashire judged the pre-sale classes.  The Overall Champion sold for 3,100gns and was purchased by the judge for Mr Coulthurst from Preston.  Denmire Crushabull May was consigned by the Dennison family from Ulverston and was a daughter of Crushabull.  Her EX91 dam continues to be a star within the Denmire herd milking in her fifth lactation.  This fine heifer traces back to the May family that originated from the Bond Haven herd in Ontario.  The Denmire herd sold seven heifers to average £2692.

The Reserve Champion was consigned by Wormanby Farms from Carlisle, Wormanby Pepper Anita was sired by Delaberge Pepper and bred from an outstanding line of cows all classified Excellent or Very Good with massive production.  She sold for 2,700gns to St. Main Dairy Farming Company, Perthshire. The Wormanby herd sold 5 other cows and heifers including Wormanby Tatoo Flo and Wormanby Rapid Sandra to average £2814.

The overall top price went to Peak Darlingo Rhapsody VG86 who was consigned by the Bunting family from Dumfries who sold for 6,000gns going to David Leyburn in N. Ireland.  This special young cow was a daughter of the three-time UK Dairy Expo Champion Peak Goldwyn Rhapsody EX97 and sister to the Irish National Champion Milliedale Dusk Rhapsody EX96.   

Boclair Holsteins from Glasgow sold Boclair Chief Apple for 3,200gns who was bought by Baltier Farming Co from Newton Stewart.  Apple had placed first in the Junior Heifer in Milk class earlier in the morning, her dam was a VG88 Atwood that is one of the rising stars within the Boclair herd.  Three sisters to the dam have previously sold at Borderway for 6,500gns 5,400gns & 5,200gns, fourth dam in this pedigree is KHW Regiment Apple EX96. 

The Newcroft Pedigree Holstein herd owned by John and David Airey from near Kirby Lonsdale sold 70 yearling heifers from their much admired herd.  These heifers were all bred from the best cow families that included Quinn, Lulu, Rinze, Celica, Kay, Rixe, Belle, Adeen and Elegance. 

This fine group of heifers topped at 1,900gns for a fifteen-month-old heifer; Newcroft Rubels Redrose who was bought by the Hastwell family from near Kirby Stephen. Redrose was sired by Rubels Red her fifth dam was Spring-Grove Strom Rose EX92 who is a full sister to proven sire Ladino Park Talent and the seventh dam was the All-American and All-Canadian winner Stookey Elm Park Blackrose EX96.

The heifer calves from this classy group topped at 1,600gns for Newcroft Alongside Adeen who was purchased by the Crowther family from Annan.  This six-month-old daughter of Brabantdale Alongside will be the ninth generation of Excellent or Very Good cows tracing back to Starbuck Ada.  This heifer was super stylish and will be a contender in the summer shows.
