Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 25th January Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 402 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with over 1500 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller show of 57 prime bulls were forward, this is due to a frosty morning and the slight easing on trade. Having said that, all well fleshed types met a fantastic trade throughout, but plainer half meat bulls still harder to cash.

Top overall was superb Limousin from Messrs Jackson, Lane End, Wigton who attained £1911.88 and was purchased by Mr Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick, sold another to £1733.55 purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

Top overall pence per kilo was paid to Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm Wigton attaining 233.5pk for a top notch Limousin cross and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.

Dairy bred bulls were once again selling fantastically well for best fleshed all others are harder to cash. Topping this section was a Montbelairde from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton receiving £1269.14 purchased by Capper Farming, Glasgow. Top pence per kilo was a Fleckvieh from Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot, Canonbie, attaining 192.5ppk and was purchased by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE: A very good entry of 45 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a very good trade seen throughout. Top overall was a marvellous Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle who attained £1728.65 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold another to £1722.36. British Blues sold to £1615.71 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Top pence per kilo of 237.5ppk for a superb Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park and 235.5ppk for another from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport.

Heifers attained a day’s top of £1712.09 from Messrs McNeil, Upper Tinwald Fram, Dumfries purchased by Pioneer Foods and £1697.78 for another from the same home purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Limousins sold to £1559.25 from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. This heifer was also the top overall price per kilo at 247.5ppk.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great show of 311 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased demand from buyers, ensuring a sharper trade throughout.

TS Farming sold a Limousin cross cow for 855kg, 197.5ppk or £1688 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Vance, Bridgehouse run of cows topped at 745kg, 218.5ppk or £1627 for a British Blue purchased by Jewitts. Messrs Airey, The Close, run of cows topped at 748kg, 187.5ppk or £1402 for a Limousin cross bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside run of Limousin cows topped at 752kg, 181.5ppk or £1364 and 567kg, 233.5ppk or £1323 both purchased by Owain Llyr.

Messrs Tinning & Sons, Mossband House sold the top priced Charolais cow for 896kg, 150.5ppk or £1348 to Les Fell. Messrs Maxwell, Druidhall run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 628kg, 211.5ppk or £1328 to Mr Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Eve & Son, Stubbsgill Farm Limousin cows topped at 569kg, 217.5ppk or £1237 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of Dairy cross cows were in great demand, with Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers run of cows topped at 815kg, 163.5ppk of £1332 for a British Friesian to Les Fell. Messrs Haston & Sons, Swordwellrigg sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 627kg, 185.5ppk or £1163 to Capper Farming. Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield run of British Friesian cows topped at 707kg, 163.5ppk or £1155 and to 682kg, 164.5pk or £1121 to Mr Alan Jarvis and Capper Farming.

Messrs Lister, Wood End Farm sold a British Friesian cow for 695kg, 163.5ppk or £1136 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Shaw, Crookdyke sold a Holstein cross cow for 874kg, 126.5ppk or £1105 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Elliott, Askrigg Hall sold a British Friesian cow for 785kg, 139.5ppk or £1095 and a Fleckvieh cow for 850kg, 124.5ppk, £1058 purchased by Dovecote Park and Messrs Roberts. Messrs Woodman & Sons, Hill House sold a Holstein cross cow for 785kg, 139.5ppk, £1095 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Fisher, Geltside Farm sold a Montbelairde cross cow for 856kg, 125.5ppk or £1074 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Imrie, Harelawhole sold a British Friesian cow for 752kg, 142.5ppk or £1071 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Matrocks, Aulby Farm sold a British Friesian cow for 823kg, 129.5ppk or £1065 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Black, Craighouse sold a Holstein cross cow for 790kg, 133.5ppk or £1054 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: A small show of 6 stock bulls were on offer with trade being sharper on the week. Messrs Robley, Demesne Farm sold a British Blue cross stock bull for 918kg, 160.5ppk or £1473 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Nixon & Son, Stotsfold Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 1013kg, 143.5ppk or £1453 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall sold a Limousin cross stock bull for 1104kg, 129.5ppk or £1429 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale saw an entry of 1454 prime sheep. Borderway bucking the trend this week with the live ring once again proving its worth. Fewer hoggs were forward saw a tighter supply resulting in an overall average of 254ppk and an SQQ of 262ppk which equates to £113.22 per head.

Two vendors hit a sale topper of £145 per head, firstly for heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Topping, Basco Dyke, Armathwaite, and secondly for Dutch Texel hoggs from Messrs Laird, Unity Farm, Brampton, which were also the leading price per kilo at 345.2ppk.

All classes of sheep met with plenty of suitors ensuring great returns for all.

CAST SHEEP: The sale of cast sheep saw trade slightly easier on the week. The sale topped at £120 twice, firstly for a Beltex from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, and secondly for a Suffolk cross ewe from Messrs Donaldson, Hazel House. Cheviot ewes sold to £89 from Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, with Mules selling to £99 from Messrs Graves, Hesket Demain.
