PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 92 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly primestock sale, quality on the whole would be less but despite this a very good trade was seen throughout. Achieving £3206.42 was 1036kg Limousin bull selling to A & D Meats this bull was one from a run of 6 from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith who averaged £2355.75 or 314.5ppk for 749kgs. British Blues sold to £2432.46 for 852kgs from Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Quine, Isle of Man sold a 710kg Charolais to £2027.05, Blondes sold to £1936.40 from Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton and Aberdeen Angus out of a dairy dam sold to £1876.94 for 797kgs from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton to Jewitts Meats. Top overall pence per kilo of 322.5p went to a 729kg Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor. Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby sold a 786kg Limousin to 319.5p. Friesians sold to £1796.87 for 763kgs from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham this same bull was also top ppk of the dairy section at 235.5p. Holstein Friesians to £1437.80 for 728kgs from Messrs Wilson, Southview, Penrith.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger show once again of 76 prime steers and heifers forward seeing the best quality sorts through to the other end of the scale. Trade looked sharp throughout for all classes with a day’s top of £2315.48 for 753kg Limousin crosses from Messrs John S Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm, Penrith sold 743kgs to £2247.58 to Mr Eric Hall and Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks Wigton selling 747kgs to £2229.80 to Mutch Meats. Messrs Cope, Kirkland Guards, Wigton sold the best Charolais Cross to £2288.27 for 777kgs to Mr Eric Hall. Top pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle with a 706kg Limousin cross to 308.5p and Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton following at 307.5p. Heifers sold to £2238.32 for a 784kg. British Blue crosses from Messrs John S Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousin crosses sold to £2154.70 for 703kgs from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle purchased by Eric Hall the same vendor sold second top at £2148.04 for 664kgs to Frasers Butchers Shop, Stranraer. Blonde crosses from Messrs Dickinson, Low House, Wigton to £1968.53 for 673kgs and Messrs Hewtson, Lords Close, Maryport to £1863.19 for 602kgs to Mr Alan Jarvis. Prime Sheep: On Monday 27th February Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep where 3283 head were forward a rise of 1945 head on the corresponding fixture last year, as week on week we welcome new faces ringside in the fastest growing sheep trade in the UK. All vendors were treated to what was described as the dearest sheep trade ever seen with prime hoggs averaging an incredible 358p per kilo for all weights and types, which equated to £161.3 per head, some £10 ahead of others operating today. Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries headed to Borderway for the first time and lead the sale at £220 for a pen of Beltex Hoggs purchased by Yorkshire Halal Ltd, also leading to the Suffolks at £205 purchased by Alex Riley and the top consignment average of £206.65 for 20 head sold, 50 lots sold for £190 to £220. Top per kilo was a pen of 39kg Beltex lambs from Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale, Gretna which sold at £199 or 510.3ppk to Vivers Scotlamb. Mule Hoggs sold to £186 for heavies from Maxwell Farming, Druidhall, Dumfries and to 357.5p from Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton. Hill sheep sold to £174 for Cheviots from Messrs Dent, Beanwham, Hexham and to 371p from Messrs Chalmers, Outer Woodhead, Canobie.
