Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 1st February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 461 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 2077 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 80 prime bulls were forward, with a good trade being achieved throughout, and prices up 10p on the week. Top overall was a superb Limousin from Messrs Priestly, Cracrop, Brampton receiving £2241.59 and Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton sold another to £2215.85, both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais sold to £1925.96 from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries and British Blues to £1750.59 from Messrs Carr, Little Bavington Farm, Newcastle, purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to a top of £1443.19 from Messrs Nixon, Oakwood, Selkirk.

Top overall pence per kilo was Limousin from Haltcliffe Farm achieving 245.5ppk and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues to 238.5ppk from Messrs Carr, Bavington for the aforementioned bull.

Dairy bred bulls were forward carrying more flesh than previous weeks, resulting in a good trade throughout.  Top overall was a British Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie receiving £1304.49 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top overall pence per kilo of 183.5ppk was attained twice, firstly by Seymour Farms, Wigton with a Montbelairde and secondly by Messrs Preston, Wedholme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: An increased entry of 56 prime steers and heifers were forward with a fantastic trade achieved throughout. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake selling to £1754.88 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, with a British Blue cross from the same home selling to £1733.55. Top pence per kilo steer sold to 238.5ppk from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Heifers seen a day’s top of £1728.87 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries and was purchased by Geoff Nutter. The same vendor also sold the top Limousin cross to £1613.39 and was again purchased by Geoff Nutter. Top overall pence per kilo of 256.5ppk was paid twice, firstly by Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm Carlisle, and secondly by Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm, both for Limousin crosses and were purchased by Geoff Nutter.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great show of 332 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a great ringside of buyers which resulted in all classes being sharper on the week. Beef cows were 7.65p up on the week.  Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold an outstanding British Blue x cow for 956kg at 266.5p totalling £2547 bought by Jewitt’s Meats who also bought a British Blue cow from Messrs Forrester, Down-by-Rigg which sold for 866kg at 199.5p totalling £1727. Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm sold a British Blue cow for 792kg at 209.5p totalling £1659 again bought by Jewitts. Messrs Allen, Humbleheugh Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 806kg at 183.5p totalling £1479 to Les Fell. Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm sold a Limousin x for 737kg at 199.5p totalling £1470 to Rob Medcalf. Moss Side Farms sold a Limousin x for 858kg at 169.5p totalling £1454 to Charles Kirkpatrick and a young Limousin x cow sold for 612kg at 210.5p totalling £1288 to Rob Medcalf. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill’s run of cows topped at 772kg at 183.5p totalling £1416 for a Simmental x bought by Les Fell.

All classes of black and white cows were in great demand with all dairy cast cows averaging 112.5ppk. Messrs Carr, New House Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 970kg at 126.5p totalling £1227 to Les Fell. Messrs Swainson, How End Farm sold a run of Norwegian Red and Holstein x heifers for 638kg at 173.5p totalling £1106 for a Holstein x bought by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm’s run of cows topped at 799kg at 138.5p totalling £1106 for a Danish Red bought by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 855kg at 128.5p totalling £1098 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 877kg at 124.5p totalling £1091 to Les Fell. Messrs Marr & Sons, Croft Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 807kg at 134.5p totalling £1085 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank’s run of cows topped at 826kg at 130.5p totalling £1077 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Dart & Son Flothers sold the top price Montbeliarde x cow for 748kg at 142.5p totalling £1065 to Steven Bowes.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep had an increased number of 1940 head forward, with all classes selling sharper on the week. An overall average of 265ppk was recorded and an SQQ of 274ppk, this translated to £120.14 per head.

Top price of the day was £150 paid for a fantastic Texel cross hogg from MJ Lawson, Pasture House, Wigton who also sold a pen of Texel cross Herdwick hoggs to 272.5ppk. Beltex hoggs sold to average an incredible 316ppk with Tony & Scott Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie selling a real run of Beltex hoggs to lead the price per kilo at 369.2ppk (39kg, £144) paid for a pen of 10 with the whole run averaging £140.92 or 358.51ppk.

Heavy lambs sold to £148 for a pen of 6 Texel ram hoggs from Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, Penrith. Suffolks sold to £140 for heavies from Messrs Dixon, Whinney Hill, Brampton and to 272ppk from the same home.  Mules to £124 for Scotch types from Peter McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton and to 261.1ppk for a ren of 20 from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths. Hill bred hoggs to £123 for Cheviots from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown with a pen of 43kg Cheviots from the same home selling to 276.7ppk (£119) with 42.5kg Blackface also from Messrs Fisher to 274.7ppk (£114)

CAST SHEEP: Cast sheep trade continues to hold firm, selling to a top of £144 for a Texel cross ewe from Messrs Hall, Horselyhill. Horned sheep sold to £75 for a pair of Swaledale ewes also from Horsleyhill. Cast rams topped at £142 for a Blue Texel from Charlotte Goddard, Frankstown.
