Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 8th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 380 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1561 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry and shortage of prime bulls with only 67 forward. Trade shone throughout with most classes 5-10p dearer on the week.

Top overall was the heaviest bull of the day a 30 month old Limousin from Messrs Mulholland, Carlisle achieving £1870.37 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 239.5ppk was paid to Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Penrith for a British Blue cross, purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues sold to 232.5ppk from Messrs Patterson, Upper Auchenlay, Dunblane, purchased by Morgan Helliwell, and Limousins to 231.5ppk from Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat.

Dairy bred bulls would see the biggest list in trade on the week, with a top of £1204 for a Montbelairde from Messrs Seymour Farms, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Holstein Friesian sold to £1132.96 from Messrs Graham, Stubbyknowe, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Montbeliarde sold to 197.5ppk from Seymour Farms, and British Friesians to 185.5ppk from Messrs Preston, Wedholme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger show of 62 prime steers and heifers were forward with a good straight trade throughout.  Top overall was a marvellous Limousin cross steer from weekly vendors Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, who attained £1742.34 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues sold to £1705.55 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods. The same vendor sold others to £1692.73 and £1660.37, purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers and E Fairlie, Letham. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks sold the top price pence per kilo of 236.5ppk to Pioneer Foods.

Heifers sold to a top of £1663.88 and £1662.38 for first time vendors Messrs Douglas, Effledge, Hawick, both of which were purchased by Border Meats, Lockerbie. Charolais sold to £1629.45 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers. Top overall pence per kilo was attained by Messrs McKelvey, Burnside Farm, Lockerbie selling a Limousin cross heifer to 265.5ppk and 259.5ppk purchase by Bowland Foods and Owain Llyr, Ruthin.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a good show of 251 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an increased ringside of buyers which ensured that all classes would be a flying trade. Messrs Cockburn, Kingside Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 797kg at 243.5p totalling £1940 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 837kg at 211.5p totalling £1770 and £683kg at 198.5p totalling £1355 to Jewitt’s Meats. Messrs Mulholland, Great Orton sold a Limousin cow for 893kg at 193.5p totalling £1727 also to Jewitt’s. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold a British Blue x cow for 815kg at 208.5p totalling £1699 also to Jewitt’s. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm’s run of cows topped at 820kg at 199.5p totalling £1635 to Jewitt’s. Messrs Yarr, Whitton Farm’s run of cows topped at 936kg at 167.5p totalling £1567 for a British Blue x and 925kg at 152.5p totalling £1410 for a Blonde x bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley’s run of cows topped at 859kg at 163.5p totalling £1404 for a Charolais and 684kg at 181.5p totalling £1241 for an Aberdeen Angus bought by Messrs Worsley and Les Fell.

All classes of cast dairy cows were in great demand. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Montbeliarde x cow for 843kg at 139.5p totalling £1175 to Dovecote Park. Castlesteads Farm’s run of cows topped at 830kg at 141.5p totalling £1174 for a Holstein x bought by Dovecote Park. Messrs Gorst, Low Wood Dairy sold a Brown Swiss cow for 921kg at 125.5p totalling £1155 also to Dovecote Park. Messrs Morley, Pettril Bank Farm’s Holstein x cows topped at 858kg at 132.5p totalling £1136 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Martin, Orton Grange Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 856kg at 132.5p totalling £1134 to Les Fell. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein x cow for 865kga t 129.5p totalling £1120 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw’s run of cows topped at 809kg at 137.5p totalling £1112 to Dovecote Park. PRIME SHEEP: A smaller show of hoggs saw plenty of local finishers bringing forward some great consignments. An overall average of 278p (SQQ 285p) which equates to £123.70 per head this shows a rise of 68p on the same week leading up to the biblical trade of 2018. No fewer than 85 lots sold in excess of £130 with 53 lots over 300ppk. Top consignment average per head goes to Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, Penrith who sold 16 53kg Texels hoggs to average £147.19. Top consignment per kilo average goes to John McCorne, Beech Croft who sold 26 44kg lambs to average 324.28ppk. Top price today was £157 for a pen of heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, Penrith. Top per kilo honours went to A & A Little, Hollands, Penton who sold export type Beltex to 367.5p.

CAST SHEEP: A smaller show forward to a keen ringside of buyers with trade being far dearer on the week for all classes of ewes. Topping today’s sale at £142 was a Texel ewe from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who also sold two Texel ewes to £138. Mules sold to £97.50 for three from Messrs Thomlinson, Long Park. Cheviots sold to £106 from Messrs Kendall, Dalveen. Many more ewes could be sold to vendor’s advantage.
