PRIME BULLS: Yet another great entry of 87 prime bulls forward with a better quality show evident.  Trade would be marginally sharper off the back of this.  Topping the sale overall at £3057.86 was 988kgs Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick.   The same home also sold 953kgs to £2978.13 both to A & D Meats.  Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton sold 904kg to £2942.52 to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Charolais from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar to £2571.03 for 954kgs and Messrs Routledge, Netherton, Brampton to £2319.24 for 827kgs.  Simmentals to £2426 for 957kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold a 703kg.  British Blue crosses to £2323.42 purchased by Bowland Foods.  An over thirty month old Galloway from Klondyke Farm, Moniaive weighing 833kg sold to £2011.70 and a 976kg Aberdeen Angus sold to £1988.16 from Messrs Gaitskell, High Field, Carlisle.

Top overall pence per kilo of 330.5 went to the 703kg British Blue from Upper Brydekirk mentioned earlier.  Next best at 328.50 went to a 585kg Limousin cross for weekly vendors Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle and Messrs Harryman, Keskadale, Keswick sold 613kg to 326.5 both purchased by Bowland Foods.  Black and whites sold to £1738.83 for a 778kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Todhunter, Stone House, Wigton and to 265.00 for a Holstein from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Carlisle with next best at 242.50 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle

PRIME CATTLE: Numbers remaining strong with 64 steers and heifers forward seeing vendors leaving with a tremendous trade throughout.  Top overall was a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton selling 755kg to £2374.48 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.   Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas sold one from a run of 6 to a top of £2313.75 for 750kgs and Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold 735kg to £2238.08, all steers forward averaged £2034.31 for 29.  Top pence per kilo overall of 337.5 went to a 535kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

Heifers sold to £2352.63 for 725kg from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle and purchased by Mr Steven Wilson, Butchers Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton.  Messrs Brough also sold 719kgs to £2254.07 and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton.  Limousins sold to £2331.25 for 746kgs from Messrs Crichton, Loughriggs, Egremont purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold 765kg to £2122.88.  A Blonde Cross from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith sold to £1903.40 for 681kgs

Top pence per kilo of 327.50 was achieved on four occasions, firstly by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton for 3 heifers weighing 586, 540 and 593kg and fourthly by Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington for 572kg, the four were purchased by Bowland Foods, Steven Wilson, Butcher and A & D Meats.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 4^th March 2024 Harrison and Hetherington conducted their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep a massive entry of 4592 head were forward this week which is over 3 times last years corresponding week, sheep travelled from near and far with vendors from far flung places such as Aberdeenshire, Northern Ireland and Norfolk being joined by a strong local following, trade across all sectors was electrifying with some jaw dropping returns posted leaving everyone in dream land.

The 3765 hoggs forward averaged 364p for all weights, types and grades represented which included 28kg Shetland lambs and 33kg swales right through the weight brackets and grading grids with an SQQ of 376p per kilo. Hamish Curry, Carlisle claimed the top price per head at £228 for a Blue Texel hogg which sold to Mutch Meats, Oxfordshire. A further 27 pens joined this one in the £200 and club, with 163 pens trading over £180 per head. Jaimie Walker, High Mindork, Newton Stewart sold the leading pen of Continental lambs per kilo which traded at 512.8p selling to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston. Suffolk hoggs sold to £218 for Heavies from Messrs Ivinson, Ingledene and to 400ppkg from Messrs Gordon, Clochnahill, Stonehaven.
