On Monday 15th February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A good show of 354 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1660 prime and cast sheep were on offer.
PRIME BULLS: A very small entry of 60 prime bulls were forward, falling well short of requirements, resulting in yet another fantastic trade, and again sharper on the week.
Heaviest and best quality were seen to top at £1996.65 for a Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith and was purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Others sold to £1725.29 and £1716 for over 30 month olds from Messrs Neil, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh, purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir. Charolais sold to £1740 to Mr Kirkpatrick, consigned by Messrs Wight, Carwood Farm, Biggar who also sold the top price Saler to £1558.76 to Jewitt Meats.
Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5ppk was paid to Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie with their Limousin and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.
Dairy bred bulls would see the biggest lift on the week, with a top of £1254.92 attained for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm, Carlisle and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. British Friesians sold to £1184.70 from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton again to Jewitts. Top pence per kilo of 190.5ppk was paid to Messrs Mitchinson, Beckstones Farm for a British Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: A very small entry of 36 prime steers and heifers were forward at the weekly sale, whereby all-round numbers and heifers in general fell well short of buyers requirements. Top overall went to Messrs J Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton with their Charolais cross steer which achieved £1856.97 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton sold top Limousin cross to £1716.06 and Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Wigton with another to £1677.33. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold the top British Blue cross to £1643.22 and was purchased by Geoff Nutter.
Top pence per kilo overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall, Appleby who attained 249.5ppk and was again purchased by Geoff Nutter. Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow sold quality again to 238.5ppk purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Heifers lacked numbers and quality this week, although a superb Charolais cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton topped the section at £1765.67 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a large show of 269 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an increased ringside of buyers. This combined with abattoirs being well short of numbers resulting in one of the dearest trades seen for some time.
Messrs OKell, Birdswood Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 1102kg at 260.5p totalling £2870 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Craig Malone, Pitcairn Farm’s run of Limousin x cows topped at 852kg at 207.5p totalling £1767, 771kg at 228.5p totalling £1761 and 731kg at 221.5p totalling £1619 purchased by Jewitt Meats(x2) and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mulholland, Great Orton sold a Limousin cow for 830kg at 195.5p totalling £1622 also bought by Jewitt Meats. H&K Farms’ run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 1024kg at 151.5p totalling £1551 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Airey, The Close’s run of cows topped at 804kg at 187.5p totalling £1507 for a Limousin x bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Irving, Becton Hall sold a British Blue x cow for 910kg at 157.5p totalling £1433 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Bell, Winterhope Farm’s run of cows topped at 699kg at 198.5p totalling £1387 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Wigham & Sons, Cold Shields sold a Limousin x cow for 629kg at 206.5p totalling £1298 to Sean McGimpsey.
All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand with heifers making 153.5p to 173.5p, well fleshed cows selling from 130-142p, out of parlour cows selling for 120-130p and plain P-grade cows 96-112p. Crossfell Holsteins cow’s topped at 1013kg at 136.5p totalling £1382 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Elwen, Netherfield Farm’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 745kg at 164.5p totalling £1225, 767kg at 155.5p totalling £1192 and 862kg at 135.5p totalling £1168 bought by Capper Farming, Les Fell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bainbridge, Park House sold the top price Friesian cow for 856kg at 140.5p totalling £1202 bought by Dovecote Park. Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein x cow for 718kg ta 159.5p totalling £1145 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison & Son, Down Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 895kg at 127.5p totalling £1141 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ferguson, Blencogo House Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 670kg at 168.5p totalling £1128 to Les Fell. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 649kg at 173.5p totalling £1126 to Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep had an entry of 1660 head forward. It was more of a case of quantity over quality this week with more lambs forward, a lack of the very best export types was evident. Trade however remained strong with an overall average of 275ppk and an SQQ of 285ppk, with equates to £123.41 per head.
Messrs Toppin, Basco Dyke, Penrith brought forward a great run of heavy Texel hoggs to top the days trading at £166 with this trailer load returning an average of £151.50.
Anthony and Stewart Shepherd, Low House, Millom showed a great run of hoggs with some smart export types mixed through, to top the trade at 378.9ppk for 38kg Beltex.
Suffolk hoggs sold to £144 from Chris Smith, North Boig, Ayrshire and to 291.4ppk from Will Hutton, Fern House, Carlisle.
Mules sold to £135.50 and £135 for heavies from John Fell, Stanger Hill to return an average of £135.39 for his consignment and to 273.5ppk from Alex Donald, Denton Mains.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £127 for Blackface from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 297.4ppk also for Blackface from Messrs Goldie & Forrest, Meinfoot.

CAST SHEEP: Trade for Cast ewes and rams continue to hold very well with all classes keenly bid for. Swaledale and mules were met with a roaring trade. Topping todays sale at £146 were three Texel rams from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House. Ewes topped at £133 for a Texel from Billy Borthwick, Catlins Farm. Mules sold to £94 from Messrs Lawson, Roe Farm. Ewes continue to meet flying rates and more can be sold to vendor’s advantage.
