PRIME BULLS: A larger offering of 100 Prime bulls forward selling to yet another fast trade with trade looking sharper on the week. Heavy bulls sold to the days top of £2790.55 for a 938kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning Farm, Keswick.  Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith sold 811kgs to £2623.59.  Messrs Brown, Mosshead Farm, Lockerbie sold 847kgs to £2485.95.  British Blues to £2535.24 for 888kgs from Messrs McGarva, Nether Abington, Biggar.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 761kgs to £2484.67.  Luings to £2416.64 for 1053kgs from Messrs Graham, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar.  Charolais to £2195.03 for 791kgs from Messrs Routledge, Netherton, Brampton.  Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold Simmentals to £1973.71 for 659kgs.  Top pence per kilo overall was 326.5p for a 761kg British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston, next best was an 811kg Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1755.70 for 682kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown to Jewitt Meats and £1745.51 for 754kgs from the same home.  Holsteins to £1543.61 for 723kgs also from South Lambhill.  679kg Montbelairdes from Castlesteads Penrith to £1544.73.  Top pence per kilo was an exceptional handy weighted Friesian at 271.5p from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton selling to Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: Another great show of 56 Prime steers and heifers forward at the number one Primestock ring in the North seeing trade marginally sharper on the week.  Topping the sale at £2346.01 for a 758kg British Blue cross steer from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold best Limousin cross to £2262.44 for 743kgs again to Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Bowe also sold next best at £2235.53 for 727kgs and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold 728kg to £2209.48 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Hewson, Jerriestown, Carlisle sold 753kg Friesians to £1743.50 and Holsteins to £1606.97 for 719kgs from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, Kirkby Stephen.

Top pence per kilo steers at 309.50 was the aforementioned British Blue cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall Wigton.  Next best was jointly at 307.5p, firstly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton for 727kgs and secondly by Messrs Philipson, Glebe, Penrith for 614kgs, these were purchased by Pioneer Foods and Mr Eric Hall.

Heifers sold to £2315.71 for 763kg British Blue cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Next best came from the same home selling a Limousin cross weighing 741kgs to £2278.58 and also purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington sold next best at £2076.12 for 632kg purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of the day was a 560kg Limousin cross of Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton achieving 329.5p and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton.  Messrs Lawson Stubbsgill sold next best at 328.50p to R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop.  Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton sold 6 to average 320.50 ppk.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A smaller show of 228 Cast Cows and Stock Bulls was forward with demand being great through out. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 740kg, 273.5p, £2023 and a Charolais cow for 728kg, 261.5p, £1903 purchased by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick,. Kedzlie Farms run of cows topped at 844kg, 235.5p, £1987 to Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow Limousin cows topped at 790kg, 249.5p, £1971 and 899kg, 215.5p, £1937 to Morgan Helliwell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot run of young limousin cows sold for 603kg, 289.5p, £1745 and 588kg, 279.5p, £1643 and 539kg, 257.5p, £1387 to Owain Llyr, Charles Kirkpatrick and Les Fell. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh Limousin cross cows topped at 614kg, 261.5p, £1605 to owain Llyr. Messrs Bainbridge, Laneside sold a Limousin cow for 586kg, 249.5p, £1462 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Woodhall run of Limousin cross cows topped at 645kg, 241.5p, £1579 to Jewitts. Messrs Wood, Waters Farm sold a Charolais cow for 836kg, 231.5p, £1935 to Messrs Roberts.

All classes of dairy cows have been in demand. Bluestone Farming run of cows topped at 753kg, 235.5p, £1773 and 696kg, 241.5p, £1680 for Fleckvieh’s purchased by Sean McGimpsey and Alan Jarvis. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head topped the Holstein cross cows at 959kg, 181.5p, £1740 and 884kg, 177.5p, £1569 to Pickstocks and Messrs Bowe. Messrs Rogerson & Son, Woodpark sold a Fleckvieh cow for 755kg, 215.5p, £1627 to Les Fell. Messrs Hetherington & son, Blue Dial Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 856kg, 187.5p, £1605 to Pickstocks. Messrs Workman, Beeches sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 813kg, 193.5p, £1573 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank topped the Friesian cows selling to a top of 890kg, 175.5p, £1561 to Phillip Bowe and a Friesian heifer sold for 636kg, 245.5p, £1561 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Wilson, South View Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 605kg, 231.5p, £1400 to Les Fell. Prime Sheep: On Monday 11th March 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held there weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw another smashing entry of 3763 head forward, this could be the dearest prime sheep report we ever write with the overall average for hoggs being an unprecedented  411p per kilo or £182.63 per head smashing all other outlets trading today by 50ppkg on what can be described as a very commercial offering. The £200 mark was no boundary this week with 169 pens selling above and beyond this landmark with 26 vendors averaging over it too! 400ppk was a starting point for pen after pen regardless of weight, breed or type. This all followed on for a barnstorming ewe trade which averaged over £130 once more with 47 pens selling over £200 to a top of £340 twice, what’s very pleasing is the support and results both sections are receiving for local and travelled vendors alike who all are all over the moon with their returns. Topping the days hogg trade at £275was a single texel cross hogg shown by Messrs Irving, Luce Mains, Ecclefechan which was purchased by Mr R Skelton, Mary Port. Top per kilo at 522p were a pen of outstanding Beltex from Brian Ryder, Newton Cottages, Moffat selling to Bowland Foods Ltd.

Suffolk hoggs sold to £270 for heavies from Pettigo Road, Co Fermanagh. Topping per kilo at 432.5p was a pen from Messrs Hargh, Brectonhill, Hecham. Mule hoggs sold to £200 for a pen of 55kg North of England from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Raughton Head. Leading per kilo at 388p was a pen from Messrs Coulter, Ballyclare.

Hill hoggs sold to £200 for a pen of Blackfaced from David Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown with top per kilo 448p for a outstanding pen of Cheviots from Messrs Mactaggart, Castle Douglas.
