Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 22nd February Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger show of 490 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 1670 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A much greater show of 102 prime bulls were forward, with a superb trade seen throughout. All best fleshed and shaped bulls excelled in price again with an overall top price of £2328.99 for an outstanding Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. The same vendor also sold another to £2077. Messrs Callion, Bolfornough Farm’s long journey from Stirling paid dividends with their top bull selling to £1939.97. Charolais sold to £1887.45 and £1710.22 from Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley, Hexham. Simmentals sold to £1474.61 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm, Newton Stewart, purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

Top overall pence per kilo of 254.5ppk and 249.5ppk was attained by Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham selling their Limousin crosses both of which were purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blues from Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Penrith sold to 229.5ppk again purchased by Ralph Pearson.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1219 for a British Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton, purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. The same family also attained the top price per kilo of 186.5ppk for another British Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: An even larger entry of 54 prime steers and heifers forward with trade proving fantastic for all classes. Top overall was a superb Limousin steer from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton who peaked at £1822.99 and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another to £1742 purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Jefferson, Abbey Cowper, Wigton sold one at £1643 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blues sold to £1728 from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo steer at 241.5p was paid to Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle purchased by Hartshead Meats. A tremendous Galloway steer from Messrs Telfer, Newton High House sold to £1212 or 216.5ppk purchased by Messrs R & JP Mullholland, Great Orton, Carlisle. Heifers saw a day’s top of £1567 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle sold another to £1567 purchased by Bowland Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 263.5p was for a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a great show of 342 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with a great ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade. Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 883kg at 261.5p totalling £2309 purchased by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet sold the top priced Limousin cow for 789kg at 193.5p totalling £1526 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm’s run of well finished cows topped at 1021kg at 149.5p totalling £1526 for a Charolais cow to Charles Kirkpatrick and 714kg at 188.5p totalling £1345 also for Charolais bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm sold two Limousin cows for 842kg at 169.5p totalling £1427 and 724kg at 184.5p totalling £1335 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 779kg at 174.5p totalling £1359 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn sold a Limousin cow for 725kg at 184.5p totalling £1337 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a British Blue cow for 630kg at 208.5p totalling £1313 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Goddard, Frankstown Farm sold a Beef Shorthorn cow for 844kg at 156.5p totalling £1320 to Messrs Roberts and from the same good home a Simmental x heifer sold for 193.5p to Sean McGimpsey.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand with a record broken for a Holstein x cow from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House selling for 1023kg at 147.5p totalling £1578 bought by Dovecote Park. Castlesteads Farms sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 738kg at 176.5p totalling £1302 to Les Fell. Messrs Dalgleish, Bulls Head Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 893kg at 139.5p totalling £1245 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold a Holstein x heifer for 672kg at 176.5p totalling £1186 to Sean McGimpsey and another for 689kg at 166.5p totalling £1147 to Les Fell. Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths’ run of Holstein x cows topped at 860kg at 135.5p totalling £1165 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 889kg at 130.5p totalling £1160 and a Friesian heifer for 640kg at 174.5p totalling £1116 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Les Fell. CAST BULLS: A small show of 6 stock bulls on offer and topped at 1215kg at 146.5p totalling £1779 for a Limousin from Messrs Bean & Son, Shield Farm to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep drew another steady entry of 1669 head. There was certainly something to suit all orders in Borderway this week. Top end export sheep although were harder to find once more with a lot of heavier types on offer.

Another great average of 277ppk and an SQQ of 285.3ppk which translates to a whopping £124.46 per head with lambs from 29-85kg all represented in the average. 47 lots of lambs sold past £140 per head with a further 16 lots beyond £150. Topping the sale at £182 were a pair of heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Watson, Roan Garth, Whitehaven. Top pence per kilo was 381ppk paid for the some exceptional Beltex hoggs shown by Mr Marcus Pieri, Stone House, Castle Carrock.

The special prizes for hill hoggs were both claimed by Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown selling a pen of 12 Cheviot hoggs at £133.50 and a further pen of 20 Cheviots at 293ppk.  Master John Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton lead the way with Mule hoggs again this week selling heavies to £135 with Geoff Smith, Kelmore Hills, Whitehaven hot on his heels at £134.

CAST SHEEP: A larger show of 204 cast ewes and rams where trade was far stronger on the week especially for heavy continental types. Topping todays sale at £139 for 3 Texel ewes from Messrs Smith, Roachburn. Suffolk x ewes sold to £124 from Messrs Hewit, Cardewlees. Mules also topped from the same home at £102. Leaner and horned ewes continue to hold extremely firm regularly selling to £50 plus.
