Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

PRIME BULLS: A great entry of 88 Prime bulls forward with a very good and fast trade seen throughout, a trade that was dearer on the week.  Topping the sale overall was a 963kg Limousin from Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall, Wigton realising at £2537.51.  Haddington Farms sold 833kg to £2461.52 and Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold two at £2428.20 and £2343.15 for 760kg and 738kg to A & D Meats and Bowland Foods.  Aberdeen Angus bulls met next highest with Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle selling 1130kg to £2435.15.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Twentyman, Osbourne Farm, Wigton sold to £2432.51 for 771kgs and Haddington Farms selling 745kg to £2417.53 Simmentals from Messrs Dyet, East Merkland, Strathaven to £2432.05 for 766kgs and Charolais to £2256.88 for 785kgs from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries.  Top overall pence per kilo of 324.00 went to the 745kg.  British Blue cross for Haddington Farm with best Limousin crosses to 319.50 for 760kgs from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1792.47 for 802kgs Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and £1710 for another weighing 752kgs selling to Jewitt Meats.  The same home sold a Montbelairde £1712.38 for 721kgs and 709kg Danish Red to £1627.16.  Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie sold 681kg Friesian to £1569.71.  Top pence per kilo overall was a 578kg Fleckviehs from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan to 259.50 purchased by Bowland Foods

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another fantastic entry and sale of 79 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby a fantastic trade was witnessed throughout, incorporated in todays sale was the Easter Primestock Show and sale on behalf of the North West Limousin and the Border British Blue Clubs, an absolute tremendous show of 44 Prime animals were presented to our Judge of the day Mr Richard Lindsay of W Lindsay & Sons, 8 Station Street, Cockermouth who performed his duties to perfection.

Taking the top overall price of the day was the 2nd Prize Limousin steer from vendors Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton with a 748kgs selling to £2374.90 to A & D Meats, closely followed by the 1st prize a lighter steer weighing 723kgs from weekly  vendors Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, purchased by Eric Hall,  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks also sold the highest priced British Blue which was 2nd Prize to £2315.77 for 734kgs to A & D Meats.  Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham sold a Galloway steer weighing 596kgs to £1892.30 to R & J P Mulholland, Butchers, Great Orton.  Top price per kilo steer at 321.00 was that of Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks which stood first prize.

Heifers swept the board with Championships winning both Limousin and British Blue awards receiving  Champion Limousin heifer was 625kgs from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and later went on to sell to the days top price of £2278.13 and a 364.50 ppk for 625kgs, this fantastic heifer was purchased by the Judge Messrs Lindsay of Cockermouth, Reserve overall honours went to the 2nd prize heifer weighed 660kgs and later sold for £2174.70 which equates to 329.00 ppk again this heifer was purchased by the Judge.  A further two Limousin cross heifers sold to 325.50 firstly for 577kgs from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by Steven Wilson, Butcher Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton and secondly by Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton selling 630kgs to W Lindsay, Cockermouth

British Blue crosses also enjoyed a fruitful day at Borderway with the Overall Champion being awarded to Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton with 633kgs selling to £2073.08 and at 327.5 ppk to John Penny Meat Wholesalers, Leeds, 2nd Prize and Reserve overall British Blue heifer came from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle selling to the top price of £2240 for 724kgs to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold 3rd Prize heifer to 320.5p for 559kgs to John Penny, Leeds and finally out with the Show Jim Dyet, East Merkland, Strathaven sold a 734kg Simmental to £1985.47.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great entry of 305 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with 18 cows selling to above 250ppk and 20 selling for over £2000 proving Borderway is the only Market to sell your cast cows and bulls at.

Messrs Morgan, Cider Mill Cottage run of British Blue cows and Limousin cows sold to average an amazing 924ppk or 276ppk or £2550. Topping at 979kg, 319.5ppk or £3127 and to 887kg, 313.5ppk or £2780 and to 998kg, 274.5ppk or £2739 for British Blue cows and to 898kg, 287.5ppk or £2581 for a Limousin cow purchased by Owain Llyr and Chrales Kirkpatrick (x2) and Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House run of cows topped at 893kg, 303.5ppk or £2710 for a British Blue cow and to 980kg, 239.5ppk or £2347 and to 875kg, 253.5ppk or £2218 for Limousin cows all purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Little, The Guards sold a Limousin cow for 700kg, 297.5ppk or £2082 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Graham, Miller Hill run of cows topped at 780kg, 271.5ppk or £2117 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Hamish Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 698kg, 277.5ppk or £1936 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Vaughan, High Dovecote sold the top priced Simmental cow for 597kg, 277.5ppk or £1656 also to Alan Jarvis.

All classes of Dairy cast cows sold sharper on the week. Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 903kg, 181.5ppk or £1638 to Phillip Bowes. STOCK BULLS: A small entry of 6 stock bulls were forward, with Messrs Redpath Farms selling the top priced Limosuin bull for 1035kg, 281.5ppk to £2913 to Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Morgan, Cider Mill Cottage sold the top priced British Blue for 1110kg, 249.5ppk or £2769 to Owain Llyr. Messrs fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a Bazadaise bull for 882kg, 249.5ppk or £2200 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold a Limousin bull for 1206kg, 227.5ppk or £2743 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Higgingson, Northrigg Hill Farm sold a Belted Galloway for 588k, 259.5ppk or £1525 to Sean McGimpsey.

Prime Sheep: A massive show of both cast and prime sheep descended on Borderway this week with vendors from Ireland to Aberdeen and Hereford to hexham and all inbetween filling the market with in excess of 6000 head of sheep all were treated a trade on yet another level with 1290 cast sheep averaging £140.30 per head and hoggs £188.67 or 417.9p (SQQ 426.79) with all types and weight range from 26kgs upwards with several suitors for every single one.

4474 hoggs were a phenomenal trade with Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas selling prime for the first time in Borderway all selling their 2 best at £340a head with an average of £263.13 or 479.14p for 24 weighing 54.92kg also posting the top ppkg of 557.4p. Beltex hoggs sold to £295 for another first time seller Miller Farms, Aberdeenshrie who sold 36 at 52.39kg to average £248.19 or 473.75ppkg. Hill hoggs sold to £242 for heavies from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries and to 432.6p from Station Yard, Castle Douglas. Suffolks to £236 a head for Messrs Neve, Riggfoot, Brampton and to 444.4ppkg from Messrs McSwiggan, Buninver. Mules sold to £222 for 52kgs to Messrs McKie, Finniness, Castle Douglas and to 418 for 45kgs Station Yard, Castle Douglas.

All ewes sold to average a fantastic £140.30 with 42 pen north of £200 with lean ewes an exceptional trade. Top of the pops was Messrs Ingram, Logie Durno, Inverurie who sold texel ewes to £320 with 27 lots over £280. Hill ewes sold to £158 for cheviots from Messrs Delargy, Armoy and being matched by Stewart Nixon, Workington. Herdwick mules to £132 to Messrs Jameson, Strathaven,
