PRIME BULLS: A much lighter entry of only 59 prime bulls forward seeing a lift in trade for all classes with everything a breeze to sell. Topping the sale overall at £3013.01 for a 946kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick. The same home also sold 881kg to £2788.37.  Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton sold 757kg to £2448.90 and Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold 761kgs to £2400.96.  Charolais crosses to £2486.71 for 871kg from Messrs Nutter, Manor Farm, Clitheroe.  Simmentals to £2281.20 for 788kg from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan.  Aberdeen Angus crosses to 730kgs from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie.  British Blues to £1936.70 for 724kgs from Messrs Miller, West Farm.   Top pence per kilo overall was the aforementioned Limousin from Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton at 323.5 to Bowland Foods, Preston.

Dairy bred bulls peaked at a new centre record of £1960.88 for a 945kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries.  Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle sold 845kg to £1846.33.  Friesians to £1573.88 for 616kgs from Claremont Properties, Penrith and Montbeliarde to £1536.95 for 590kgs from Seymour Farms, Wigton, a top pence per kilo of 260.50 for this Montbeliarde, Friesians to 255.5p from Claremont Properties.

PRIME CATTLE: A fantastic entry of our 90 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway weekly sale whereby trade would ease ever so slightly to join the National trend but despite this new, old and existing customers left highly delighted.  Taking the top overall price of the day were Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries with one of their five cattle weighing 796kgs and attaining £2511.38 to A & D Meats.  Messrs Muir, also sold 794kg to £2393.91 selling cattle into the £2200 plus club were Messrs Cape, Kirklands Guards, Wigton, Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas x2, Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £2384.04.  Charolais to £2320.13 from Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton for 807kgs and 764kg Blondes to £2165.94 from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.  Top pence per kilo steer came from Cleughbrae Farm, Dumfries achieving 315.50 for a Limousin cross.  Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands, Maryport sold next best to 314.5 for 658kgs.

Heifers sold to a top of £2313.23 for a 745kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth.  Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold next best at £2240.63 for 717kg.  British Blue crosses to £2109.70 for 763kg from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton.  Messrs Brough, Old Rectory sold 714kgs to £2102.73 and Charolais crosses to £2007.99 for 666kgs from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth selling to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton Carlisle.  Top overall pence per kilo of 319.50 went to Messrs Beattie, Woodfield, Annan with 624kg Limousin cross achieving 319.50.  Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick sold next best at 316.50 for 556kg.

Messrs Nixon, Ribton House sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 1043kg, 191.5p, £1997 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hewitson, Kinghill sold a British Blue cow for 735kg, 241.5p, £1775 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Nichol, Lawston Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 654kg, 261.5p, £1710 to Alan Jarvis. Prime Sheep: On Monday 25th March 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep where a total entry of 4454 head were forward all classes of sheep remain a strong trade with 711 ewes completely off the scale to average £153.30 and 3742 hoggs leveling at 391p, a strong return and a in stark contrast to other outlets prices.

Ewes sold to £340 for a fantastic Texel ewe from Messrs Coulter, Ballyclare a further 53 pens sold over £200 with new local vendors Messrs Peile, Parkgate Hall, Wigton & Messrs Steel Lesson Hall, Wigton selling Beltex & Charollais ewes to £280, another new vendors Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick Upon Tweed selling 20 ewes to average £261.18 to a top of £305. Moir Livestock, Fraserburgh sold a pen of 5 crackers at £320. Hoggs sold to another brisk trade well ahead of pre-sale expectations, these topped at £300 for a pair from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries to Lancashire Direct Halal. The super singles hogg show was won by Messrs Graham, The Wreay, Wigton which sold at £275 to Parskey Butchers, Wigton. With the double yolkers pair of hoggs being won by Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton which topped the ppkg league table at 562p or 40kg, £225 to Bowland Foods Ltd.

Suffolks topped at £232 for Messrs Coulter, Ballyclare and at 445p from Messrs Ferguson, Priory Nook, Carlisle. Hill hoggs sold to £220 for cheviots from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries and to 423p for Herdwicks from Messrs Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Wigton. Perhaps the trade of the day belonged to Messrs Crowther, Spittalriddinghill, Annan who sold 240 Blackfaced & Cheviot hoggs weighing £29.92 at 401.87ppkg or £120.24 per head. Mule hoggs continued to fair well at Borderway with these being topped by first time vendor Messrs Barker, Halton Park, Lancaster who sold pens to £195 and £190 with 4 vendors sharing the pence per kilo honors of 400p. another travelled vendor sold 319 Suffolk cross continental hoggs weighing 49kg to average a magnificent £199.21 per head or 406ppkg.
