PRIME BULLS: A smaller entry of 58 prime bulls due to the Bank Holiday Monday.  Bulls met a flying trade throughout as like every Bank Holiday Monday trade.  Topping the sale at £2876.70 was an 860kg British Blue cross from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals sold to £2594.48 for 887kgs from Messrs Dyet, East Merkland, Strathaven, the same home also sold 819kgs to £2305,49.  Limousins from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold to £2251.80 for 707kgs and £2054 for 649kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top overall pence per kilo of 334.5 was paid to Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm for their aforementioned British Blue cross. Messrs Richardson, sold a Limousin to 318.5 for 707kgs and averaged a healthy 314.93 for 669kgs.

Dairy bred bulls sold to a new centre record of £1911.48 for 785kg Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie.  Fleckviehs to £1731.62 for 748kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and Holsteins to £1610.28 for 648kgs from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and £1609 for 625kgs from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith. A top pence per kilo of 265.5p went to a 572kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan, while Holsteins sold to 257.p from Musgrave Hall, Penrith and Friesians to 255p from Whins Farm, Lockerbie

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller entry of 39 prime steers and heifers forward due the Bank Holiday.  Trade like the bulls was dearer on the week with all classes very easily sold although a poorer show on the whole but some good flesh on offer.  Topping the sale overall was an 837kg Charolais from Messrs Fox, St Johns Kirk, Biggar achieving £2590.52.  Next best at £2390.79 was a 753kg British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Limousins sold to £2328.13 for 745kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks , Wigton purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold 741kgs to £2323.09 and 746kgs to £2308.87, a 680kg Hereford cross from Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae, Gretna sold to £1819.  Top price per kilo steer was that of Messrs Nicholson, The Lake achieving 317.5 to Mr Eric Hall.

Heifers sold to a top of £2107.56 for 728kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall, Carlisle to Mr Eric Hall.  Charolais crosses to £2094.84 for 792kg from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle and £2016.35 for 687kg to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blue crosses to £2003.49 for 678kgs from Messrs Pollock, Wreay Hall, Carlisle.  Herefords to £1704.55 for 730kgs from Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo overall was a 575kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton at 325.50 with another at 581kgs to 319.5 from the same home.

Prime Sheep: The largest show of prime and cast sheep seen in decades descended on Borderway on Monday with 6338 head sold. A record show of 1708 cast sheep sold to an unbelievable trade with the whole sale averaging £171.30 per head. No fewer than 135 lots sold at over £200 a head with 37 lots passing £250 to a top of £345 for pure Texels from Buniver Road. Suffolks to £240 from Messrs Merrall, The Green. Mules to £200 from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell and hill ewes to £178 from Messrs Gregg, Ballynahinch. 4630 prime sheep forward this week, numbers beyond belief however plenty hoggs were noted by purchasers as lacking a little bit of finish. Vendors from Fraserburgh to Lincolnshire all enjoyed a brisk trade to level at 390.1p or £182.66 this included 1560 sheep under 39kg. Topping the sale at £275 was a great single Texel x hogg from Seymour Farms, Wigton. A light show of best export types sold to 536p from Beltex’s from Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton. Topping the consignments was Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who sold 17 hoggs to level at £227.82. A fantastic run of 168 heavies from Messrs MacTaggart, Station Yard, Castle Douglas sold to average £224.89.
