Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when a show of 2,444 sheep were forward consisting of 1,753 prime hoggs and 691 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £173.50 were a pair of 45kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport.

Topping at 425p/kg were a pen of 8 38kg Beltex cross hoggs which sold for £161.50 from Messrs Simpson, Highscale Farm, Wigglesworth, with another pen of 7 39kg Beltex cross hoggs selling for £157.50 (403.8p/kg).

The consignment of 63 hoggs from this home sold to average 39.8kg £152.08 (382.11p/kg)

Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of 4 40kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £167.50 (418.8p/kg) with another pen of 40kg hoggs from this same home selling for £165.50 (413.8p/kg)

Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm, Dufton sold 40kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £169 and 422.5p/kg with another pen of 3 42kg hoggs from this home selling for £168.50.

Messrs Skelton, Maryport sold a pair of Beltex cross hoggs weighing 41kg to make £168.50 (411p/kg).

Mule hoggs sold to £137.50 for a pen from Messrs Sibson, Hole House, Keswick which were bought by M. Helliwell, Rochdale.

A pen of 20 54 Mules sold for £131 from Todholes Partnership, Elsdon which were bought by M Helliwell.

Swaledale hoggs sold to £130.50 for a pen from Messrs Sibson, Hole House bought by D Morland, with another pen of 5 Swaledale hoggs from this home making £120.

Messrs Patchett, West Summersides, Ripon sold a great consignment of 343 Texel cross hoggs to top at £141.50 for a pen of 20.

A pen of 40 Texel cross Mule hoggs from this home weighing 48kg sold to make £133.50, with pens of 22 44kg Texel cross Mule hoggs making £125 (284p/kg) and a pen of 20 43kg Texel cross Mules making £122.50 (285p/kg) from West Summersides.

A fantastic trade for all classes of prime hoggs was achieved with an SQQ average of 287.01p/kg being achieved which included over a third of the hoggs forward being horned, hill bred and Mules.

Many more hoggs could have been easily sold to great advantage.

Cast sheep topped at £180.50 for a Cast Texel ram from Messrs Raine, Stanhope Gate Farm, Barnard Castle.

Texel cross ewes sold to £160.50 from Messrs Bainbridge, Ash Dub, Barnard Castle which were bought by Pak Mecca Meats.

North of England Mule ewes sold to £106 for a pen of 53 from Messrs Patchett, Ripon which were bought by A. Atkinson.

Swaledale ewes topped at £75.50 on two separate occasions for a pen of 9 from S Buckle, Bleathgill, Barras and also for a pen of 8 from Messrs Hill, Whitewall Farm, Great Asby.

All classes of Cast sheep were also a much sharper trade once again here at Kirkby Stephen!
