Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller show of only 54 prime bulls forward with quality a lot less as well.  Big heavy and best fleshed bulls good to sell as were plainer black and whites.  Top price of the day was the second bull to enter the ring selling to £2718.95 for 890kgs.  Charolais from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan, the second top price of the day went to the first animal to step into the ring, an 814kg Limousin from Messrs Leiper, Bank Top Farm, Newcastle both purchased by A & D Meats.  Next highest price was the third animal to enter the ring on the day an 888kg Simmental from Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg, Moffat selling to £2393.16 and purchased by Mutch Meats.  Top pence per kilo of 323.5p went to the aforementioned Limousin cross from Messrs Leiper.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1817.37 for 762kgs Friesian from Messrs Blamire, Mid Whinnow, Wigton and Holstein Friesians to £1599.50 for 700kgs from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 246.5p went to a 588kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Carlisle while Friesians to 242.5p for 732kgs from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie.  More bulls required weekly.

PRIME CATTLE: Once again a good entry of 63 prime steers and heifers forward on the week with less top quality on offer but a good show of meat amongst the sale.  Topping overall was an 853kg Charolais cross from Messrs Gate Brackendene, Cockermouth at £2358.55 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Cape, Kirklands Guards, Wigton sold another to £2204.32 for 736kg.  British Blue crosses to £2256.26 for 729kgs and £2225.31 for 719kgs both from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle and both purchased by A & D Meats.  Limousins sold to £2252.15 for 723kg from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and 722kg from the same home to £2249.03 to A & D Meats.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold 741kgs to £2241.53 and a 729kg Blonde cross to £2256.26 to Mr Eric Hall. An 814kg Montbeliarde from Messrs Kerr, High Brow, Nelson, Carlisle sold to £1925.11.  Top pence per kilo and top overall were two 722kg and 723kg Limousin cross steers from Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Wigton at 311.5.

Heifers topped at £2079.84 for a 672kgs British Blue cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, the same home also sold 693kgs to £2033.96 to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Charolais crosses to £2021.17 for 739kgs from Messrs Gate, Brackendene, Cockermouth.  Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold 609kg Limousin cross to £1811.78 to Steven Wilson, Butcher Shops, Corby Hill and Brampton.  Messrs Bland, Flatt sold a dairy bred Aberdeen Angus to £1801.97 for 734kgs to Mr Eric Hall.  Top pence per kilo of 309.5 went to the 672kg British Blue cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a good entry of cast cows was forward at Borderway with a plainer show, however, trade would be sharper on the week.

Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 958kg, 227.5p and £2179 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs McKelvey, Burnside sold a Limouisn cross cow for 801kg, 291.5p, £2094 to Owain Llyr and an Aberdeen Angus heifer from the same home sold for 692kg, 237.5p and £1643 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Leiper & Sons, Bank Top’s run of cows topped at 874kg, 215.5p, £1883 for a Limousin cross to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Corcoran, Viewfield Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 883kg, 211.5p, £1867 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Dale-Sunley, Ross Farm cows topped at 657kg, 227.5p, £1494 to Philip Bowes.

180 dairy cast cows were forward. A plainer show however better cows would be sharper on the week. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 717kg, 257.5p, £1846 and a Holstein cross heifer for 677kg, 247.5p, £1675 and 642kg, 227.5p, £1460 both purchased by Michael Helliwell (x2) and Les Fell. Seymour Farms sold a Montbeliarde cross cow 790kg, 211.5p, £1670 to Scotbeef. Messrs Leiper & Sons, Bank Top sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 820kg, 203.5p, £1668 to Pickstocks. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein cross cow for 927kg, 177.5p, £1645 and 859kg, 191.5p, £1644 to Pickstocks and Scotbeef. Messrs Ramsey, Gillespie sold a Montbelairde x cow for 761kg at 213.5p totalling £1624 to Scotbeef. Messrs Foster, Coombe Crag sold a Friesian cow for 832kg at 187.5p totalling £1560 to Pickstocks.  Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 804kg at 187.5p totalling £1507 to Scotbeef. Prime Sheep: On Monday 15th April H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted another phenomenal entry of 4661 head. This represents a turnout of over three times last years corresponding sale.

Spring Lambs: 81 spring lambs sold to average 466.47p (SQQ 475.25p) with 72 of these being native bred, these topped at £230 twice for Suffolks from Messrs Atkinson, Gill Farm, Aspatria to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, Ossett and from Messrs Denby, Riddings Hill, Longtown to Mutch Meats Ltd, Oxford. Top pence per kilo at 572p was a pen of 6 Beltex from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.

Hoggs: 3424 prime hoggs saw a great rise on the week to average £192.86 or 415p (SQQ 423p) for all weights and grades of which all met great demand with 1312 or 38.5% of the hoggs selling over £200 per head! Two vendors shared the spoils at the top of the price list this week both selling Continental x hoggs to £272 being Messrs Padkin, Drumcork Farm, Dumfries and Messrs Anderson, Mesona, Dumfries both lots sold to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, Ossett. Messrs Shepherd, Low House, Millom sold 2 42kg Texel x Beltex hoggs to top per kilo at 595p or £250 selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, Ossett. Suffolk hoggs sold to £235 for a pen of 28 58kg hoggs from Buninver Road, Tyrone and to 449p for a pen of 5 from Derryaghna. Hill hoggs sold to £228 for Cheviots from Messrs Shepherd, Low House, Millon and to £226 from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Castle Douglas top per kilo at 439p was a pen of 41kg Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs Coulthard, Brisco Hill which comes to £180 per head. Mules sold to £225 from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Castle Douglas and to 438p for a pen of 40kg hoggs from Gordon Cartmell, Hollands, Penton. 11 pens of Mules sold over £190 with 6 of these from £200-£225.

Cast Ewes: Another great show of over 1200 ewes sold to a nationwide leading average of £155.72. Ewes topped at £320 for a pen of pure Texels from Douganhill Farms, Castle Douglas with almost 15% of the sale over £200. Mule ewes sold to £200 from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Raughton Head. Hill ewes topped at £185 for Cheviots from Ballynahinch Road.
