Borderway Primestock Sale

PRIME BULLS: A downturn in numbers sees an uplift in trade. The upturn in good dry weather saw only 56 prime bulls forward at Borderway weekly sale which saw a rise in the trade and my belief is that this is the start of a trade on the rise.  Topping the sale overall was an 818kg Limousin cross from Messrs Cooper, Hallmoor, Carlisle achieving £2368.11 to Mutch Meats and Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria sold 791kgs to £2353.23 to A & D Meats and the same home sold an 829kg dairy bred British Blue to £2068.36 to Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Messrs Trafford, Springfield, Cockermouth sold a 771kg Simmental to £2054.72.  Top overall pence per kilo of 317.5 was achieved twice and on both occasions by Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth.  These bulls weighed 673kgs and 844 kgs to A & D Meats and Mutch Meats.

Dairy bred bulls sold to the dearest seen for a long time with a day’s top of £1657.71 for 678kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.  Fleckviehs to £1615.93 for 593kgs from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan and Friesians to £1567.05 for 674kgs from Claremont Properties, Penrith, a top pence per kilo of 272.5p went to the aforementioned Fleckvieh from the Hendersons at East Bowhill, Montbelairdes to 267.50 for 566kg from Seymour Farms, Wigton and Holstein Friesians to 247.5 from the Dickinsons, at High House.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 46 prime steers and heifers due to the well overdue upturn in weather.  Trade would be sharper on previous couple of weeks.  Top price of the day was a 723kgs Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle at £2288.30 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 727kgs to £2279.15 to A & D Meats and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake sold 745kgs to £2268.53, the same vendors sold the joint top pence per kilo at 316.5p for 712kgs as did Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, for 723kgs.

Heifers sold to £2063.93 for 638kg Limousin cross from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Calrisle at A & D Meats.  Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold 654kg to £1854.09 to Hartshead Meats.  The same vendors also sold best Charolais cross weighing 660kgs to £1805.10.  Kedzlie Farms Ltd, Halifax sold 681kgs Luing to £1780.82.  Top pence per kilo overall was Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, 638kg Limousin cross selling to 323.5p.  Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Carlisle sold 586kg to 306.00 selling to Steven Wilson, Butcher shops, Corby Hill and Brampton.  A lot more clean cattle required for next Monday’s sale where trade is expected to be sharper again.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good entry of 221 Cast cows were forward with all classes being well above vendors expectations with beef cows averaging 206.5p plus 11.9p on the week.  Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm run of cows topped at 827kg 237.5p £1964 and 760kg 255.5p £1941 for Limousin crosses purchased by Michael Helliwell and Charles Kirkpatrick.  Mr Jim Mulholland, Great Orton sold a Limousin cow for 768kg, 249.5p £1916 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 725kg 261.5p £1895 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Kedzlie Farms run of cows topped at 618kg 257.5p £1591 and 630kg 251.5p £1584 for Luing x cow and 655kg 247.5p for £1621 for British Blue x cow bought by Alan Jarvis, Michael Helliwell and Jewitts.  Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow sold a Limousin cow for 744kg, 245.5 £1826 to Morgan Helliwell.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 23^rd April H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep, a smaller entry than seen of late with 3065 head forward. Despite last week’s decline towards the middle to end of the week Borderway posted the only national average north of £4 per kilo for 2128 prime sheep with the sale average of 400.91p (SQQ 408.2p) being some 20-30p ahead of other outlets, this levelled at £183.94 per head. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries topped the market selling Texel x heavies to £252. Blue Texel x Beltex sold to £245 for hoggs from Messrs Wood, Broadwater, Aberdeenshire and the leading lambs from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston sold for £245 to Yorkshire Halal. Top pence per kilo was 605p for Beltex’s shown by Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who sold 10 lambs to an average of 556.17p or £220.80 per head. Ewes were sharper on the week topping at £280 for Blue Texels from Messrs Watson, Millrigg, Wigton and for Texels from Messrs Donaldson, East Park, Thursby.
