Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday evening, when 3,357 sheep were forward consisting of 2,640 prime hoggs and 717 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £250 were a pen of eight 44kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Phillips, Fir Tree Farm, Harrogate.

This same home also topped at 611.5p/kg for a pen of eight 39kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £238.50, with a pen of twelve 40kg making £241 (306.8p/kg), a pen of six 41kg making £242.50 (591.5p/kg) a pen of fourteen 43kg at £242.50 (564pkg) a pen of seven 41kg making £240 (585.4p/kg) a pen of eight 43kg making £239.50 (557p/kg) and a pen of six 45kg making £239.

Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold two pens of seventeen and fourteen 44kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £225, with a pen of four40kg making £220 (550p/kg).

This home also sold 60kg hoggs to £246 with a pen of 59kg Texel hoggs making £245.

Messrs Mason, East Farm, Malton sold a pen of ten 45kg hoggs to make £236.50.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown sold a pen of 38kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £226 (594.7p/kg).

Messrs Atkinson, Abbey Park, Bleatarn sold a pen of eighteen 59kg Texel cross hoggs to make £240, with another pen of eight 65kg, and 56 Texel cross hoggs making £240 also from this home.

Suffolk cross hoggs sold to £221 for a pen of 58kg from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm.

Hill Cheviot hoggs sold to £220 from Messrs Wise, Carleton Park, Richmond.

Hill Cheviot hoggs also topped at 433.7p/kg for a pen of twenty-four 43kg which made £186.50, and for another pen of twenty-four 44kg hill cheviots which made £185 (426.5p/kg).

Charollais cross hoggs sold to £221 from Jojo Andres, Boscar Flats, York.

Mule hoggs topped at £214 for a pen from Messrs Bell, High Dyke Farm, Penrith.

Mule hoggs also topped at 403.3p/kg for a pen of twenty 45kg which made £181.50 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm.

Blackfaced hoggs topped at £203 for a pen of thirty 54kg hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, with this same home also selling a pen of thirty 43kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £178.50 (415.1p/kg), a pen of twenty nine 44kg making £181 (411.4p/kg) and a pen of thirty 44kg Blackfaced hoggs making £180.50 (410.2p/kg).

The consignment of 336 Blackfaced hoggs from Smalmstown Farm sold to average 46kg £185.23 (402.7p/kg).

Swaledale hoggs topped at £178.50 for a pen of fifteen 53kg from Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm, Dufton.

Swaledale hoggs also topped at 365.8p/kg for a pen of twenty-five 38kg hoggs which made £139 from Hayllar Farms, Brough, with this home also selling tow pens of twenty-five 39kg Swaledale hoggs to make £141.50 (362.8p/kg) and £141 (361.5p/kg).

Messrs Atkinson, Manor House Farm, Skipton sold a pen of twenty-five 44kg Swaledale hoggs to make £160 (363.6p/kg).

An SQQ average of 418.57p/kg and an overall average of 404.64p/kg for 2640 hoggs which includes over 1200 horned and Mule hoggs.

Cast sheep were a flying trade for all classes being the dearest seen for some time.

Topping this section at £302 were a pair of Texel ewes from H&B Wharton, Galloper Rise, Tebay, with this home also making £300 and £280 of Texel ewes.

Beltex ewes sold to £290 from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras.

Messrs Wareham, Little Tottingworth Farm, East Sussex sold Beltex ewes to £282, with this home also topping at £210 with Suffolk cross ewes.

Mule ewes sold to £177 from Messrs Luck, Milestone House, Barnard Castle.

Rough Fell ewes sold to £154 from Messrs Deighton, Orchard Farm, Bleatarn.

Swaledale ewes topped at £147 from Messrs Pratt, Intake Bottom, Kirkby Stephen.

Messrs Luck, Milestone House also sold a pen of three Swaledale ewes to make £145.
