PRIME BULLS: An increased entry of 75 prime bulls forward selling to a great trade throughout. £3107.91 was the top overall today, this was a 1014kg Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton. Messrs Craik, Bankswood, Dumfries, sold 731kg to £2306.31 and Max Hyslop, Gillrigg, Lockerbie sold 728kg to £2020.20, both to A & D Meats.
British Blues sold to £2668.50 for 805kg from Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns, Wigton and Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle sold 668kg to £2147.62.  Charolais crosses sold to £2033 for 760kg from Messrs Duff, The Laythes, Wigton, purchased by Mitch Meats. Simmental crosses to £1995.84 for 704kg from Messrs Clanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie. A 813kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Gillrigg, Lockerbie sold to “1930.88to Jewitt Meats. Top overall pence per kilo of 331.50 went to the aforementioned British Blue from High Tarns, Wigton, followed by 321.50ppk for Beck House, Carlisle.

Dairy bulls sold to £1594.80 for a 720kg Holstein from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith and to £1571.50 for 700kg Holstein Friesian for Messrs Graham, Lambhill, Longtown.
A top price per kilo of 234.50ppk was achieved three times, twice by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton and once by Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton for 668, 633 and 639kg.

PRIME CATTLE: A very good entry of 66 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale of primestock. Twenty cattle forward sold over £2000 per head to a days overall top of £2327.85 for a 767kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold the next two best at £2290.63 for 733kgs and £2251.77 for 742kgs. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold the best British Blue crosses achieving £2294.31 for 723kgs. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold 696kgs to £1917.48 to Mr Eric Hall. Two steers achieved a joint top pence per kilo of 312.5p firstly by Messrs Bowe Bothel Parks, Wiston for 733kgs and secondly by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake with 715kgs. Heifers sold to a days top of £2195.57 for 743kgs from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria purchased by Mr Eric Hall, Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold 711kgs Limousins crosses to £2179.22, 686kgs, £2116.31 and 684kgs to £2082.78 all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh also broke the  676kgs barrier and achieved £2011.10 for their 676kgs to Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton. Top overall pence per kilo of the day went to Joe Little, Greenhill, Wigton with a 566kg Limousin cross achieving 318.5p selling to Bowland Foods Preston.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: An increased number of 305 Cast cows was forward with Beef Cows in great demand.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold two outstanding Limousin cows for 835kg, 267.5 £2233 and 813kg, 263.5, £2142 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Limousin cows topped at 829kg, 257.5, £2134 and 714kg, 261.5 £1867 bought by Owain Llyr and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Kirk, Hall of Drumpark sold Limousin cows for 890kg, 235.5 £2095 and 844kg, 239.5p, £2021 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm, sold the top priced Angus cow for 998kg, 201.5 £2010 to Scotbeef.  Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 747kg 267.5 £1998 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top price Simmental cows for 873kg, 223.5p, £1951 and 824kg 235.5 £1940 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Roberts. Messrs Watson, Rotherhope Farm, sold the top priced Hereford cow for 909kg, 211.5 £1922 to Scotbeef.  Messrs Gibson & Son, Thornton Towers run of cows topped at 666kg, 257.5 £1714 to Michael Helliwell.

179 Dairy cast cows were forward with quality cows being in demand, however plainer cows would be cheaper on the week.  Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm Holstein x cows topped at 843kg, 209.5, £1766 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House run of cows topped at 858kg, 197.5 £1694 for a Norwegian Red sold to Pickstocks.  Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head Holstein cross cow topped at 889kg, 187.5 £1666 to Scotbeef.  Scotbeef also purchased a Holstein cross cow from Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm weighing 878kg, 187.5 £1646.  Messrs Martin, Tempest Tower sold 830kg, 195.5 £1622 again a Holstein x purchased by Pickstocks.

Messrs Graham, Stubbyknowe sold a Holstein x heifer for 676kg, 239.5 £1619 to Michael Helliwell.  Another Holstein heifer, this time from Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, weighing 718kg, 227.5 £1633 sold to Les Fell. A Danish Red heifer from Messrs Rome, Fauldie sold for 568kg 235.5 £1337 purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank farm, sold a Holstein x heifer for 549kg 229.5 £1259 to Michael Helliwell.  Blaiket Mains sold a Friesian Heifer to Morgan Helliwell weighing 530kg, 229.5 £1216.  Messrs Morley, Hadderdale sold a Holstein x heifer for 597kg, 227.5 £1358 to Michael Helliwell.

CAST BULLS: Six cast stock bulls were forward and topping the day was a Limousin  Stock bull from Messrs Telfer, Tarnflatt Hall for 1105kg, 219.5 £2425 to Owain Llyr.

Prime Sheep: Borderway enjoyed another bumper days trading with 3985 head of prime and cast sheep, again this shows an entry more than three times last year’s date. 1243 cast ewes sold to record breaking levels with an overall sale average of £174.94 being the dearest seen anywhere, ever!

All ewes of any type sold to extreme rates. Continental ewes sold over £300 on seven occasions topping at £350 for texels from Ballymena Road with local vendors Brian Strong, Caldbeck selling to £340 and Messrs Cowx, Hudscales to £330. Suffolk ewes sold to average £195.3 to a top of £250 for a pen of 3 from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick Upon Tweed with Messrs Brough, Clappers, Wigton and Ballyninch Road and hot on the heels at £245. Mules sold to average £146.12 to £188 from Messrs Graham, White Moss, Carlisle & Ballyninch Road. No fewer than 441 ewes and rams sold over £200.

179 spring lambs were forward with several new & returning customers, topping the sale at £275 was a pen of Texel Lambs from A & MJ Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, Wigton selling to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd, Ossett. Messrs Trafford sold 12 lambs to average £255.75 per head. Messrs Brough, Clappers, Wigton topped the Suffolks at £270 selling to Steven Wilson Butchers. Adam and Amy Bell, Wigton topped the per kilo at 540.5p for 37kgs Texels to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd. A section average of 454p, SQQ 456p or £194.09 was achieved.

2562 prime hoggs provided a marvelous entry for the time of year with hoggs forward to fill every order and Borderway fairing extremely favorably and well ahead of other outlets recording an average of 394p, SQQ 413ppk and per head value of £186.61. Stealing the show this week was a hum dinging 42kg Beltex hogg from John Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton who sold at £300 or 714p to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd.

Heavies sold to £240 for 55kg texels from Adam and Amy Bell, Thethwaite, Wigton and 50kg Beltex from Robert Mckie, Finniness, Castle Douglas. Mule Hoggs sold to £220 for heavies from Messrs Higginson, Northrigghill, Brampton and to 394.7p from Mary Brough, Chapel House, Wigton Hill Hoggs sold well to £206 (x2) for Cheviots from Messr Hyslop, Annanhill, Lockerbie and to 430p for 43kg from Messrs Watson, Four O Boot, Houghton. Messrs Beaty, Langhorn felt the might of Borderway selling 43kg pure Herdwicks at £170 which is £15 per head better than his Wednesday returns.
