Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 1^st March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again, a great entry of 410 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 2436 prime sheep were on offer on Monday.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 86 Prime bulls forward with trade very similar on the week seeing bulls peaking at £2066.48 for a Limousin from Messrs Bowe, Midtown, Wigton and £2003.40 for another from Messrs Eve, Stubsgill, Wigton.  Messrs Dinning, Watch Currock, Hexham to £1885 and Messrs Miller, West Farm, to £1833.34.  Simmentals from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie to £1710.22.  Top overall price per kilo of 247.50p was paid to Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill, for yet another Limousin, 

Dairy bred bulls saw a good trade for all well fleshed bulls, plainer types would be marginally easier on the week.  A day’s top of £1360 was paid to Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton for a British Friesian.  Holstein Friesians from Messrs Stalker, Ratten Castle to £1315.16 which was also the top price per kilo of 213.50p.  Fleckviehs to 199.5p from Seymour Farms, Wigton and 197.50p for British Friesians from Messrs Bland, The Flatt.

PRIME CATTLE: Once again a good entry of 54 prime steers and heifers forward with a fantastic trade received throughout. Topping the sale was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport receiving £1863 and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold one to £1761 and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold another to £1715 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses sold to £1638 from Messrs Nicholson purchased by Messrs E Fairlie, Letham. Top pence per kilo of 235.5p was achieved three times, firstly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Wigton, secondly by Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and finally by Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle all for Limousin crosses.

Heifers were a flyer to a top of £1517 for a Limousin from Messrs Douglas, Effledge, Hawick purchased by Messrs E Fairlie. Messrs Harrington, West Whitrigg, Wigton sold top British Blue to £1451 purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers. Top overall pence per kilo of 250.5p was paid to Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton for one of their Limousin crosses purchased by Bowland Foods. Messrs Miller’s run of seven heifers averaged 241ppk. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great entry of 284 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a flying trade. Mr Gordon Park, Hen Moss sold a Simmental x cow for 783kg at 227.5p totalling £1781 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold the top price Blonde x cow for 870kg at 176.5p totalling £1535 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Tattersall, Enzieholm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 871kg at 161.5p totalling £1406 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Twentyman also sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 805kg at 174.5p totalling £1404 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 708kg at 183.5p totalling £1299 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Roddam & Partners, Blackcarts Farm sold a Luing x heifer for 192.5p to Sean McGimpsey.

Once again, all classes of dairy cast cows were in high demand. Messrs Whitfield, Pelutho Grange, Wigton sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow for 891kg at 148.5p totalling £1323 to Les Fell. Messrs Wise, Low Tarns, Silloth’s cows topped at 859kg at 150.5p totalling £1292 for a Fleckvieh bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nixon, Ribton House, Workington sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 877kg at 143.5p totalling £1258 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw, Egremont sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 813kg at 144.5p totalling £1174 to Steve Bowes. Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle sold the top priced Friesian cow for 775kg at 137.5p totalling £1065 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Mellin, Stockholm Farm sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 178.5p to Capper Farming, Messrs Threlkeld, Bailey Town sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 177.5p totalling 177.5p to David Holmes. Castlesteads Farms sold a Holstein x heifer for 174.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Reed, Croft House sold the top priced Friesian heifer for 169.5p to Les Fell. CAST BULLS: Only 4 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Marrs, Manor Farm selling a Limousin bull for 966kg at 149.5p totalling £1444 to Mike Helliwell.

PRIME SHEEP: A larger show of 2177 head was present at the weekly sale of prime hoggs. A broad spectrum of weights were forward with all classes and confirmation from 28kg to 73kg being represented, most importantly each and every one was keenly bid for with all types seen to be sharper on the week. An overall average of 278ppk and an SQQ of 285ppk which equates to £125.37 per head.

Topping the sale at £188 were heavy hoggs consigned by Messrs Topping Basco Dyke, Penrith, who also sold others to £182. This consignment of 85 averaged 50kg, £145.15 or 289.81ppk.

Top pence per kilo was paid for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Dempster, Castelhill, Lockerbie, these sold at 387.2ppk (39kg, £151 per head)

Suffolks sold to £140 on three occasions, twice from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, and also from Messrs Charnock, Millholme and to 280ppk from Messrs Mitchell, one more.

Mule wethers sold to average £125.24 and to a top of £137 from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell and to 278.6ppk from Messrs Fell, Thethwaite.

Hill sheep sold to £134 for Blackface from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs Farm, Newcastle and Cheviots from Messrs Skelton, New Hall, Maryport, and to 300ppk for Blackface again from Messrs Dixon.

CAST SHEEP: Spring has sprung with the ewe trade this week, with more being forward to better rates. A larger show of 270 were forward, selling to a top of £130 on 3 occasions. Firstly for a Texel ewe from Messrs Brough, The Croft and secondly for a pen of Texels from Messrs Thompson, Woodhead, and finally for a Beltex ram from Messrs Gardner, Glebelands. Zwartbles ewes sold to £110 from Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill and a pen of 9 Mule ewes from Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm sold to £98. Blackface ewe sold to £92 from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs Farm. The ewe trade continues to soar and more are required on a weekly basis.
