Kirkby Tephen Breeding Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart, held their annual New Fair Prize Show and Sale of Breeding outfits.

Topping the sale at £202 per life and £404 per outfit were the first placed pen of ten Texel hoggs with lambs at foot from first time consignors Messrs Whiteford, Tercrosset, Brampton purchased by Messrs Simpson, Wigglesworth. With another two pens of Texel hogg with lambs both sold to me £175 and £350 per outfit both selling to todays judge, Messrs Samuel, Annan.

Messrs Maughan, Sunny Side, Great Asby sold a pen of 2 and 3 shear continental ewes with twin lambs at foot to make £178 per life (£534 per outfit). With this same home selling a pen of 4 shear ewes with twin lambs to make £140 per life (£420 per outfit) selling to Messrs Dodd, Temple Sowerby. And also selling a pen of Beltex hoggs with lambs at foot to £184 (£368 per outfit) also selling to Messrs Simpson.

Messrs Winter, Clickham Farm took the first placed mule hoggs with Suffolk lambs at foot which sold for £160 (£320 per outfit) selling to Messrs Ryeland, Kendal. Messrs Winter also took second placed pen of 10 continental hoggs which went on to sell for £162 per life (£324 per outfit) selling to Messrs Birkbeck, Soulby.

A pen of three crop Suffolk cross ewes sold to £160 per life (£320 per outfit) from Messrs Brown, Oak House, Ravenstonedale selling to Messrs McCrone, Carlisle.

With this home also selling three crop Suffolk cross ewes with twin lambs at foot to £141 per life (£423 per outfit) selling to Messrs Sayer, Hackthorpe.

The first placed pen of Swaledale ewes with lambs was awarded to a pen of five from Messrs Sayer, Musgrave House selling to £128 (£256 per outfit) selling to Messrs Garth, Clapham.

Messrs Nicholson, Slip Cottage sold a pen of five 3 shear Swaledale ewes with twin mule lambs at foot to make £102 per life (£306 per outfit) selling to Messrs Capstick, Ravenstonedale.

Geld hoggs topped at £191 for a pen of eleven Mules from Messrs Jenkinson, Whingill purchased by Messrs McCrone.

Improved weather and grass conditions resulted in a flying trade for all classes of sheep and lambs, been the dearest seen so far. All breeds of hoggs and lambs forward sold to average £140.69 which is up £21.15 on the year. Ewes with lambs at foot, majority of which were Swaledales ewes average £86.14 per life up (£17.34 on the year). All Texel hoggs with lambs at foot sold to average £150.51 per life which was up £42.01 on the year.

Swaledale ewes with lambs sold to average £78.10 per life up £19.30 on the year.
