Twenty one sold over £1980 to a days overall top of £3099.15 for a 970kg Limousin from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle selling to A & D Meats. The same home sold a further two to 2908.79 for 867kgs and 2670.11 for 849kgs. Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham sold 846kgs to £2483.01 and Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold 785kgs to £2476.68. Nard Vue Farm, Ashham Hall, Penrith sold on 857kg Beef Shorthorns to £2103.94 to Mutch Meats. Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie sold top Simmental at 696kgs to £2049.72 to Bowland Foods and top Charolais cross to £2046.33 for 702kgs to Mutch Meats. Natives sold to £1970.67 for 806kgs from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown for a Hereford cross and Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £1928.88 for 912kgs from Messrs Duncan, Whitehall Farm, Dumfries and Galloways to £1821.38 for 748kgs from Messrs McCornick, Barquhill, Newton Stewart. Top overall ppk of 335.5ppk went to one of the aforementioned 867kg bulls from Messrs Norman, Little Orton. Fleckviehs from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan to £1634.436 for 611kgs to Bowland foods and Holsteins to £1594.93 for 968kgs from Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith. Top pence per kilo of 272.5p went to a 568kg Fleckvieh from the Hendersons, East Bowhill, Annan. PRIME CATTLE: A superb entry of 96 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly primestock sale.
We said we could handle more week on week and today proved this, with more cattle on offer and trade dearer on the week. Twenty six cattle sold between £1900 and £2553.74 which equated to the days top overall price. This was a 812kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and purchased by Harry Wood, Bowland Foods, Preston.
Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, sold 723kg to £2237.69 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, selling 736kg to £2233.76 and Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas, selling 771kg to £2232.05 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. British Blue crosses from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, sold to £2390.93 for 746kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston and 707kg to £2152.82 to Mr Eric Hall. Charolais crosses to £1870.85 for 710kg from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle.
Top price per kilo of 320.5p went to Messrs Nicholson, The Lakes 746kg British Blue steer selling to Bowland Foods. Best Limousin crosses reached 314.5p twice, Firstly by Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse for 812kgs and secondly by Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport, for 651kg which was purchased by A and D Meats.
Heifers were very easily sold with good quality and meat on offer, top overall was a 677kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Bankdale, Carlisle, achieving £2088.55 and purchased by R and JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. Messrs Hird, West End Farm, Cockermouth, sold 715kg to £2027.03 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Wigham, Cold Shields, Haltwhistle sold 671kg to £2002.94. Charolais crosses to £1813.83 for 618kg for Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport. A handy native, Aberdeen Angus weighing 585kg from Messrs Steel, Lesson Hall, Wigton sold to £1576.58 and was purchased by Jewit Meats, Springmoor.
Top overall price per kilo of 327.00 went to a corker of a 568kg Limousin cross from Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, selling to Bowland Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, to 314.50 for 585kg to Mutch Meats and Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas to 311.5p for 625kg to R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: An increased entry of 251 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday. Messrs Clark, West Glengyre Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow at 914kg for 227.5ppk making £2079 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold a Charolais cow at 1000kg for 201.5ppk making £2027 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow at 767kg for 249.5ppk grossing £1913 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie also sold the top priced Simmental cow at 888kg for 215.5ppk making £1913 to Messrs Roberts. DA Harrison & Co sold a run of 14 cows to average an amazing 743.57kg for 235.28ppk and £1749.48, to a top of 739kg, 257.5ppk and £1902 and 734kg, 257.5ppk at £1890 and 626kg at 267.5ppk and £1674 for a Limousin cross, purchased by Owain Llyr twice and Jewitts. Prime Sheep: On Monday 13th May 2024 H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep where another exceptional entry of 5198 head were presented for sale. All classes were in high demand throughout the sale, with a particular emphasis being placed on meat, particularly through the prime sections , ewes have eased slightly over the last week but are still an incredible trade for all types.
Just shy of 1500 ewes sold this week to a top of £320 for Texel ewes shown by Christian Wilson, Station Road, closely followed by local home Norman Farming , Little Orton who sold to £300 Beltex sold to £250 and suffolks to £240 from m/s mccorry Derrymore with mules peaking at £185 for M/s Paterson , Tirmacsprid, horned sheep topped at £150 for Swaledale tups from M/s Bainbridge Laneside.
An incredible entry of 600 spring lambs forward this week which shows significant growth on the year sold to £300 and 732p for a tremendous Beltex x lamb from M/s Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston purchased by bowland foods Ltd , M/s Trafford Bassenthwaite Hall brought a great run of 17 lambs forward to average £235.18 topping both the texel and Suffolk sections at £242 and £240 or 538ppkg. A sale average of 450p for all types being achieved.
3130 hoggs mid May in Borderway is absolutley outstanding and a huge thanks for all your support , meated hoggs of all weights were in favour with bidders selling well in excess of 400p with more tail end types starting to appear , the section average of 390p and sqq of 398p would prove a level ahead of anything available anywhere else. Topping the sale this week at £245 was a great Dutch texel hogg from John Fell Stanger Hill Wigton purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd , top price per kilo was a pen of exceptional Beltex export hoggs shown by M/s Morgan Bridge Farm Hereford which sold at 579ppkg to Yorkshire Halal Meat Ltd . Suffolks topped at £226 from m/s Hutton fern house , Carlisle with mules at £216 for heavies from M/s Harrison Dundraw, Wigton. Hill types sold to £200 for Cheviots from John Barker, Cappelgill, Moffat. The leading consignment came from m/s Findlay Easter Balgillo , Tannadice who sold a wonderful run of hoggs to average £228 per head.
