Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night when 2,217 sheep were forward consisting of 1,761 prime hoggs and 456 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £168 were a pen of 42kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Phillips, Fir Tree Farm, Harrogate which were bought by Yorkshire Halal Meats.

Topping at 421p/kg were a pen of ten 38kg Beltex cross hoggs which sold for £160 from Messrs Robshaw, Tadcaster and were bought by Field Fresh Trading.

Messrs Armstrong, Crossfell House, Penrith sold 48kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £163.50 selling to Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Messrs Phillips, Fir Tree Farm sold a pen of eleven 40kg Beltex crosses to make £157.50 (393.8p/kg) selling to Field Fresh Trading.

Mule hoggs topped at £140.50 for a pen of 58kg hoggs from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington which were bought by M Helliwell, Rochdale.

Messrs Graham, Brechin sold a pen of twenty-one Mule hoggs weighing 55kg to make £137 also selling to M Helliwell.

Messrs Wearmouth, Southwaite Farm sold a pen of 41kg Mule hoggs to make £114.50 (279.3p/kg) selling to Pak Mecca Meats.

Cheviot cross hoggs sold to £138 for a pen of six 54kg hoggs from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith which were bought by J. Birkbeck.
Another pen of thirteen 50kg Cheviot hoggs from this same home sold for £133 selling to A. Atkinson.

Good meated pens of Swaledale hoggs were a flying trade with £125.50 being achieved on three separate occasions, firstly for a pen of forty-three 49kg hoggs from Messrs Graham, Brechin which were bought by A Slack, then for another pen of seventeen 49kg hoggs from Weardale Estates, and also for a pen of Swaledale tup hoggs from Messrs Procter, Villa Farm, Great Musgrave.

Messrs Green, Hill Farm, Alston sold a pen of twelve 45kg Swaledale hoggs to make £124.50 and 276.7p/kg.

Messrs Stirke, York made their first journey over to Kirkby Stephen and sold a pen of twenty-two 45kg Swaledale hoggs to make £122 and 271.1p/kg. 
This consignment of 145 Swaledale hoggs sold to average £124.26 and 265.4p/kg.

Messrs Graham, Brechin sold their run of 166 Mule and Swaledale hoggs to average £130.52.

Lightweight hoggs were also in strong demand with a pen of twenty-one 35kg Swaledale hoggs selling for £93.50 (267.1p/kg) from Weardale Estates and were bought by A. Atkinson.

Heavy hoggs were also in very strong demand with a pen of 61kg hoggs making £155 from Messrs Robshaw, Tadcaster, with another pen of 56kg Texel cross hoggs from this home selling for £150.

Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold another pen of 56kg hoggs also to make £150.

A SQQ average of 290.45p/kg and £124.53 per head was achieved with just short of half the hoggs forward being Mule and horned lambs.

340 Mule hoggs forward averaged £124.07 and 260p/kg.

Buyers were way short of requirements and many more hoggs could be sold to great advantage here at Kirkby Stephen.

Cast sheep were another very strong trade once again.

Texel cross ewes sold to £150 for a pen of three from Messrs Hird, Amersber Cottage, Kaber.

Swaledale ewes sold to £83.50 for a pen from Messrs Wearmough, Southwaite Farm.

Rough Fell ewes sold to £91.50 for a pen of ten from Messrs Holme, Weasdale Farm, Newbiggin on Lune.

Cast rams sold to £145.50 for a pair from Messrs Harker, Grayrigg Hall, Kendal.
