PRIME BULLS: The largest show seen this year of prime bulls with 118 forward selling to an excellent trade throughout, if anything today the very best u grade bulls seen a little resistance but all others perhaps sharper on the week. Taking the top two places today were loyal customers Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat selling 877kgs and 850kg Limousins to £2749.40 and £2673.25. Messrs Hunter Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold the next best at £2435.66 for 772kg and Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington to £2416.97 for 807kgs all purchased by A & D Meats. Aberdeen Angus bulls to £2261.75 from Messrs Campbell, Thrunton Farm, Alnwick and to £2059.75 for 839kgs from new vendors Messrs Mitchell, Newton of Wiston, Biggar. British Blue crosses to £1987.30 for 668kgs from Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm, Keswick purchased by Mutch Meats. Messrs Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie sold a 702kg Charolais crosses to £1926.99. Top overall pence per kilo of 317.5p went to the aforementioned 725kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat.  Dairy bred bulls sold to a days top of £1876.25 for 790kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and to £1720.57 for 763kgs from Messrs Martin, Horseholm Farm, Dumfries both purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Friesians to £1825.74 for 828kg from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie and to £1682.90 for 743kg. Holstein/Friesian from Messrs Sloan, Woodend, Moffat purchased by Messrs Metcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. Top price per kilo of 267.5p went to a 58kg Fleckvieh from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan to Bowland Foods, Preston. Holstein/Frisians from Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Carlisle sold to 244.5p for 631kgs and Friesians to 242.5p for 595kgs from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Penrith purchased again by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE:  Yet another great show of 71 Prime steers and heifers forward at the Borderway weekly sale where trade would see cattle a mile in front of other competitors and deadweight options.

10 cattle sold over £2200 and 32 sold over £2000 to a days overall top price of £2308.87 for a 746kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle.  Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold next two best at 765kg £2291.18 and 752kgs £2259.70.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £2258.17 for 709kgs joining a fleet of west coast vendors were Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton selling four steers to a top of £2229.38 for 725kg and £2225.07 for 738kgs.

British Blue crosses from Messrs Sisson, Fenton Farm, Brampton sold to £2194.03 for 745kg.  A tremendous run of Charolais crosses from Messrs Crowther, Spittalriddinghill, Annan sold to £2152.50 for 700kgs.  Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton sold Aberdeen Angus cross to £2006.46.  Top pence per kilo overall was a 690kg Limousin from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake selling to the days top of 320.50 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks to 318.50 for 709kgs to A & D Meats.  Charolais steers to 309.5 for 675kgs from Messrs Crowther, Spittelriddinghill selling to Bowland Foods.

Heifers sold to a top of £2241.15 for 761kgs British Blue cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle and the same home selling 657kg to £1974.27 purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill and Brampton, Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, Carlisle sold a 718kg Charolais cross to £2021.17 again to Steven Wilson.  The Gass family also sold top Limousin cross selling 646kg to £1934.77 to Steven Wilson.  Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith sold 631kgs to £1934.02 purchased by Whittakers Butchers.  Top pence per kilo at 308.5 was a Limousin cross from Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm, Bishop Auckland and to 306.50 from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot.  Messrs Brough, Old Rectory sold top price British Blue cross at 300 ppk.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 20^th May 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep. Numbers proved harder to source this week, however all sections saw a significant rise on last year with brilliant new and local support throughout the sale. 1236 cast sheep were presented this week where an overall average of £152.74 shows a strong return on other outlets, heavy ewes showing a slight ease on returns however light and leaner types a big trade once more. Messrs Ingram, Logie Durno, Aberdeenshire sent a fabulous run of 146 ewes to average £188.47 topping both the Texels and Beltex at £260. Suffolks to £215 for Messrs Brough, Clappers. Mules to £157 from Davy Coulter and hill sheep to £152 for cheviots from Stanley Gregg with hornies to £128 from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie. 544 local spring lambs this week averaged 439p per kilo or £178.56 per head to a top of £258 from Messrs Lawson, High Boonwood, Gosforth with Suffolks to £245 from Messrs Brough, Clappers, Wigton. Top per kilo at 600p was Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft who sold 32kg Beltex x Texel lambs to £192. Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite continue to reap the rewards  in Borderway selling 18 tremendous lamb to average £246.89 per head. Hoggs were a fantastic trade being dearer on the week with 1674 sold to average £168.46. topping again this week both per head and per kilo was Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton with 47kg Texel x Dutch lambs at 388p or £240 (x2) with a further pen of 40kg hoggs selling at £208 per head. Heavies sold well to £238 (x3) for 52kg beltex from Messrs Ingram, Logie Durno, Aberdeen. Suffolks sold to £224 and 464p (42kg) both lots came from Pettigo Road, Kesh. Mules sold to £207 for a pen of 55kg, from Messrs MacTaggart, Dunjop, Castle Douglas and to 416p from Messrs Smith, Towiemire, Keith. Hill Hoggs sold to £195 for 48kg Cheviots from Messrs Watson, Four O Boot and to 423p for Cheviots from Messrs Foulie, Guise, Aberdeenshire.
