RED & WHITE HEIFERS TOPS AT £2250

21 ANIMALS SELL FOR OR MORE THAN £2000

The March Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale saw just over 200 dairy cattle traded with prices topping at £2250 and 21 animals selling for or more than £2000.  The overall average for recently calved heifers was down on the month to average £1761 representing exceptional value for money with most of the animals purchased going to Cumbrian milk producers. 

There was excellent quality on offer with only a small difference in value for the very best animals.  It was also worth noting that short bred heifers sold for the same price as the in-calf heifers indicting demand for summer and autumn calving animals will be strong.      

Graham & Margery Rudd from Jenkin Cross Farm, Wigton sold two very nice heifers to average just over £2000.  They topped the trade at £2250 with a perfect Red & White Holstein heifer giving 37kgs.

The Romanway Holstein herd sold ten cows and heifers and topped at £2200 for a De-Su Allstar daughter.  She was giving 33kgs and bred from a high yielding dam by Gerwyn.

One of the most eye-catching heifers in the sale was Witherslack Delta-Lambda Hiedi consigned by the Inman family from Grange Over Sands.  She was sired by Lambda and had an amazing rear udder.

Simon Moon from West Thornber Farm, Skipton sold ten heifers.  The first five were Ho-Jo heifers sired by Jersey sires from Holstein cows.  They topped at £2000 twice for two Lemonhead daughters giving 32kgs.  His five Holstein heifers averaged £1937 and topped at £2120 for a daughter of Secretariat.      

Balcurvie Holsteins sold 19 heifers topping at £2050 for a daughter of Sandy-Valley J Pharo giving 35kgs.  Another special uddered from this home sired by Dewars sold for £2000.

Wreaywood Holstein sold ten cows and heifers and topped at the cow trade with two cows selling for £2050.  They first was sired by AltaCosmo giving 55kgs and the second was by DG Brody giving 54kgs.

There was strong demand for Ayrshire cattle they averaged £1930 and topped at £2120 for Swaites Beau from the Adamson family. 

Ho-Jo heifers and cross bred cows and heifers sold well with two topping at £2000.

In calf heifers remain excellent value for money March and April calving heifers topped at £1500 for a Facebook heifer.  Short bred heifers sold well to average £1237 and topped at £1400 numerous times for daughters of Doorman, Numero Uno & Manifold mainly bred in January. 

The dispersal of all the youngstock from East Farm went very well, the trade of day was for the youngest calves selling to a top of £800 to average £563.
