Borderway Beef Breeding Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Friday 24th May, Harrison and Hetherington held their monthly Beef Breeding sale at Borderway Mart.

COWS & CALVES: A great entry of 355 cows and heifers with calves at foot were forward. This sale also included the dispersal of cows and calves from Crowhall Farm.

Messrs Malone, Pitcairn run of outstanding heifers and calves topped at £7200 for a Limousin cross heifer and heifer calf and to £5500 for a Limousin heifer and bull calf. Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale sold a large run of heifers and calves topping at £5200 for a Limousin cross heifer and calf.

Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomaston run of heifers and calves topped at £5000 and 4900 for Limousin cross heifers and calves.

Crowhall Farms tun of well farmed stock cows topped at £4800 for a 5 year old Limousin cow and bull calf. Messrs Renton, Highlaws sold the top priced British Blue cross cow and bull calf for £4500. Crowhall Farms sold a Limousin stock bull for £5800.

BULLING HEIFERS: A very good entry of 160 bulling heifers were forward. The sale saw an overall average of £1970.46 per head. A days’ overall top of £3700 was achieved for a red roan Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton Farm, Annan. The same vendor also sold the next best a Black Limosuin cross to £3000. British Blue crosses to £2800 from Messrs Renton, Highlaws, Morpeth and the same price from Messrs Boyd, Terregles Town, Dumfries, another Highlight in the British Blue crosses were first cross heifers out of Frisian cows were six selling to £2500 from Messrs Foley Bros, Mirlaw House, Newcastle. Beef shorthorn crosses sold to £2450 for a paid from Messrs Muir, Middle Farm, Penrith. Charolais to £2100 from Messrs Twentyman, Osbornes Farm, Wigton and finally Simmentals to £1940 for a pair from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House Lockerbie.

STOCK BULLS: A small, select show of beef bulls were forward to the May Mix Breed sale saw a day’s top of 4500gns for a pedigree Limousin from Messrs Bell, Hilltop Farm, Keswick. Messrs Robertson, Newton Logierait, Pitlochry sold the next best, a ¾ Limousin bull to 4400gns. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton sold his best to 4200gns, with Simmentals to 3500gns.

Quality bulls were in good demand and many more could have been easily sold.
