Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday evening, when 4008 sheep were forward consisting of 500 Spring Lambs, 3044 prime hoggs and 464 cast sheep.

Topping the hoggs at £236 where a pen of thirteen Texel cross hoggs from Jo Jo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

This home also sold a pen of seventeen 61kg Texel cross hogg to make £234, with another pen of seventeen 60kg making £232, a pen of twelve 59kg making £222, and a pen of seventeen 57kg making £220.

Topping at 416.7p/kg where a pen of fourteen 42kg Texel cross hoggs which made £175 from Norfolk.

Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington sold a pen of Texel cross hoggs to make £226.

Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith sold a pen of Texel cross hoggs to make £220.

Jo Jo Andrews, Boscar Flats sold a pen of Suffolk cross hoggs to make £220, with another pen of twenty three 58kg making £218.50 (376.7p/kg) and a pen of thirteen making £215.

Hill Cheviot hoggs sold to £200 for two pens of thirteen.

Blackfaced hoggs topped at £176 for a pen of twenty two from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

Messrs Ratcliffe, Shopshire sold a pen of twenty two Blackfaced hoggs to make £175, with this home selling a pen of seventeen 48kg Blackfaced hoggs to make £170 (354.2p/kg)

12 active buyers in attendance and competing for all classes of lambs, hoggs and ewes with trade remaining firm for all weights of good meated sheep.

Cast Sheep

All classes of ewes were a flying trade and topped at £278 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Wilkinson, Bollihope Shield Farm, Bishop Auckland.

Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith sold a pair of Texel ewes to make £250.

Messrs Sayer, Town End Farm, Hackthorpe sold a Rouge ewe to make £246.

Mule ewes sold to £180 from Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill, Workington.

Cheviot ewes sold to £169 from Messrs Sayer, Hackthorpe.

Swaledale ewes sold to £120 from Messrs Pratt, Intake Bottom, Kirkby Stephen.

Cast sheep were in short supply and will be wanted over the next few weeks.
