PRIME BULLS: A few more bulls forward on the week with 70 sold. Trade would be far better than any expectations as most bull markets up and down the country fell way back at the middle to end of last week. Topping the sale overall was an 1018kg Charolais from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses selling to £3048.91 to A & D Meats another from the same home sold to £2603.03. Limousin crosses to £2383.22 for 812kgs from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton and Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham to £2169.23 and £2113.75. British Blues to £2029.75 for 706kgs from Messrs Coates, Rainscar, Settle and Aberdeen Angus to £1856.63 for 802kgs from Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle. Top pence per kilo of 299.5p went to the top overall priced bull in the mart from Messrs Goldie. Black and Whites sold to £1590.80 for a 656kg Holstein from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite Lane, Carlisle and Holstein Friesians to £1564.18 for 703kgs from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie. Top price per kilo of 242.5p went to the same bull from Messrs Pinguey and Holstein/Friesians from Messrs Armour Milton, Moffat to 230.5p for 641kgs.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another fantastic show of 70 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale.  Trade would slip in line more this week with the National down trend, despite this quality still shone through with 40 steers averaging £1980 and the 30 heifers averaging £1672.30 and 22 sold over £2000 to a days overall top of £2492.88 for an 816kg Limousin cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and purchased by A & D Meats.  Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold another weighing 784kgs to £2293.20.  British Blues crosses from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold to £2265.54 for 732kgs selling t o A & D Meats.  Next best British Blue cross came from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton who sold 762kg to £2122.17 and purchased by Eric Hall.  Top overall pence per kilo came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton pen when he sold 709kg to 320.5p and purchased by A & D Meats.

Heifers sold to grand total of £2288.39 for 754kg Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont selling to Mr Eric Hall.  Next best at £2073.89 went to a 742kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well.  Messrs McKie, High Threave, Newton Stewart sold a 30 month old Limousin cross weighing 669kgs to £1983.39.  Top British Blue cross was a 654kg from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle at £1926.03 purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo heifer of 315.5 went to a 535kg Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and purchased by Brookwood Abattoir Halifax

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: 221 cast cows forward selling once again to a flying trade throughout despite this not being a great show of cows. Topping the sale at £2081.73 was a 966kg Simmental cow from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan selling to Scotbeef, Inverurie. British Blue crosses from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton sold to £1957.07 for 772kgs. Limousins from the same home sold to £1859.55 for 770kgs. Beef Shorthorn crosses from Messrs Nairn, Shieldhill, Lockerbie to £1853.30 for 860kgs and a 791kg Galloway to £1672.97 from Messrs Cornthwaite, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 275.5p for a 534kg Limousin cross from Messrs Cadzow, Duncrahill, Tranent and 274.5p for another from the same home British Blue crosses to 273.5p for 678kgs from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton. Top priced dairy cast cow was a 897kg Holstein/Friesian from Messrs Jefferson, High Pow, Wigton receiving £1601.52 and £1589.88 for 805kgs Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm, Carlisle sold 778kgs to £1567.67 and a top price per kilo of 225.5p went to a 592kg Friesian from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton and for 203.5 for 583kgs from Messrs Williamson, Barrowmoor Farm Appleby.

STOCK BULLS: A great entry of 10 cast bulls forward where a great trade was seen for all qualities. Top three overall were a Limousin with Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Perth selling 1257kgs to £2821.97. Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Appleby had 1133kgs to £2690.88 and Messrs Scott, Bleabank, Cockermouth sold 185kgs to £2435.83 and a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Thompson, Yew Tree, Brampton sold 878kgs to £1172.13.

Prime Sheep: On Monday 3rd June 2024, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which attracted another phenomenal offering of 4647 head forward, some 250% increase on 2023. 1933 cast sheep sold this week to a vibrant ringside of purchasers ensuring some fantastic returns. New vendors Messrs Tattersall, Town Farm, made the trip from York and were well rewarded selling a great run of ewes to top the sale at £320 to Yorkshire Halal Ltd, Ossett. Beltex and Suffolk ewes both topped at £260 for smashing ewes from Christian Watson and Tara O’Brien respectively, the £200 barrier was battered time and time again. Dorset and Mules ewes both peaked at £195 from Dessie McCorry and Dylan Leonard respectively with Blackface to £144 for a great run from Christian Watson. 856 local prime lambs show a positive turn out for the time of year with all types sharper on the week, the top call in this section was £250 for heavy lambs from Messrs Smith, Roachburn and to 512p from Messrs Merrall, The Green, an overall of 412ppk to £172.23 was achieved with a shortage of heavy lambs noted. Another great show of 1858 hoggs, with meat and quality demanding a premium, 349p is 50p ahead of competitors. Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton, signed off in style topping at an overall average of £240 which also topped the sale per kilo at 533p.
