Borderway Prime and Cast Sheep

Prime Sheep: On Monday 10^th June 2024 Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep. A June record number of 5938 head was presented this week with sheep forward from no fewer than 16 counties across the UK. A great show of 2105 cast ewes & tups enjoyed a sharper return on the week with a large number of hill sheep included in an average of £146.8 these topped a £300 for a great Texel ewe from Messrs McGregor, Longrigg. Beltex topped at £255 from Ian Knight, Stephney Farm with Suffolks to £245 from Messrs Bell, Craigslea, Lockerbie. Mules topped at £188 from Stanley Gregg with horned sheep to £158 for Swaledale Tups from James Pritchard, Evistones, Hexham.

3830 prime sheep penned this week which started with an amazing show of 1511 spring lambs which sold to a solid trade throughout with fireworks for the top end. Messrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite Hall, Wigton sold a top class run of lambs to top at £300 and again at £280 purchased by Yorkshire Halal Ltd and Bowland Foods Ltd. Messrs Trafford sold 38 lambs to average £235.71 per head. Claremont Properties sold 9 lambs at 38kg to average £192 per head to a top of £260 for 39kgs which is also sold topping 667ppkg to Yorkshire Halal Meats Ltd. Suffolks sold to £220 & 440p from Messrs Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.

2321 hoggs were very much a two tiered trade with weight & meat selling well, light and lean sheep proving less on the week. Top today at £235 were heavy hoggs from Adam and Amy Bell, Thethwaite, Raughton Head which sold to Andrew Dawson. Top per kilo was a great pen of Beltex hoggs from Messrs Morgan, Bridge Farm, Hereford at £476.25 with this run of 258 hoggs leveling out at an impressive £190.11. Suffolks sold to £208 from Messrs Wilson, Bowness Hall and 365p from Messrs Machin, Low Farm, Brandsby, York who sold 257 hoggs for the first time in Borderway.
