Kirkby Stephen Prime and Cast Sheep

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of Prime Sheep on Tuesday evening, when 5839 sheep were forward consisting of 1032 Spring Lambs, 3716 prime hoggs and 1091 cast sheep.

Topping the prime hoggs at £252 was a 77kg Beltex cross hogg from Messrs Hetherington Old Hall Farm, Penrith.

Topping at 442.3p/kg where 52kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £230 from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York.

Texel cross hoggs sold to £244 for a pen of twenty 68kg from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm with this home also selling a pen of ten Texel cross hoggs to make £240 a pen of fourteen at £236 and two pens of sixteen and seven at £230. Three pens of nineteen, seventeen and eight Charollais cross hoggs making £240, £239 and £237. Also with two pens of eleven and nine Suffolk cross hoggs making £237 and £235, the consignment of 148 hoggs from Old Hall Farm sold to average £235.51.

Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington sold 69kg Texel cross hoggs to make £243, £234 and £230 with this home also selling 67kg Suffolk cross hoggs to make £230.

Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras sold Beltex cross hoggs to make £241.

Messrs Skidmore, Needless Hall Farm, Toronto sold 58kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £241.

Hill Cheviot hoggs sold to £203 from Messrs Morgan, Crook.

Mule hoggs sold to £180 for a pen of thirty five 51kg hoggs from Messrs Dawson, Mount Pleasant Farm, York.

Blackfaced hoggs sold to £178 for a pen of fourteen from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Penrith with another pen of twenty two from this home selling for £176.50.

Balckfaced hoggs also topped at 356.5p/kg for a pen of twenty five 46kg hoggs which sold for £164 from Messrs Ratcliffe, Shropshire.

A massive show of 3716 hoggs travelled from all parts of country for what is slowly coming to an end of the old season hogg trade.

All consignments who turned out hoggs here at Kirkby Stephen Many of which have supported us throughout the season to which we are truly grateful for, where treated to a buck in the national trend with all good meated hoggs of all weights being a flying trade.

Cast Sheep

Cast sheep topped at £295 for a pen of four Texel ewes from Messrs Brannen, Scar Top, Penrith. With this home also selling Texel ewes to £282, and a pen of three Suffolk ewes to make £220. Beltex cross ewes topped at £260 from Messrs Askwith, Middle Mown Meadows, Crook. With this home also selling a pair of Texel cross ewes to make £252, and a pen of four Beltex cross ewes to make £246.

Messrs Wharton, Galloper Rise, Tebay sold Texel ewes to £260.

Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield sold a pen of six Texel cross ewes to make £242 and £240 with a pen of nine Beltex ewes from this home making £240.

Messrs Clark, Mill Cottage, Murton sold Texel cross ewes to £240.

Messrs Simpson, Highscale farm sold a pen of twelve Beltex cross ewes to make £230.

Rough Fell ewes topped at £142 for a pair from Messrs Huck, Dale View, Ravenstonedale.

Swaledale ewes topped at £136 from Messrs Davis, Lockthwaite, Nateby.

Messrs Birbeck, High Stennerskeugh, Ravenstonedale sold a pen of three Swaledale ewes to make £134.

Messrs Fawcett, Argill House sold a pen of four Swaledale ewes to make £133.

A flying trade for all classes and breeds of Cast Sheep was achieved here at Kirkby Stephen once again with numbers of all types being required to fulfil buyer demands here at Kirkby Stephen.
