CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a good entry of 245 Cast cows and Stock bulls was forward with all classes being sharper on the week.

Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm run of Limousin cows topped at 841kg, 265.5p £2232 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.   Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains run of British Blue cows topped at 830kg 263.5p £2187 and 786kg 267.5 £2102 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.  Leo Sawrij, Sewborwens Farm, run of cows topped at 761kg 271.5p £2066 and 722kg 264.5p £1909 for Limousin x cow and 618kg 264.5p £1634 for a British Blue x bought by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Watson, Whygill Head run of cows topped at 776kg 265.5p £2060 to Charles Kirkpatrick.   Messrs Houldey, Kirkleton House sold the top priced Simmental cow for 803kg 237.5p £1907 to Phillip Bowes. All classes of Dairy cast cows would be sharper on the week.   Messrs Glendinning, Bridge End sold a 6 year old Holstein x cow for 973kg, 199.5p £1941 to Charles Kirkpatrick.   Messrs Jackson & Sons, Lingstubbs sold a 5 year old Friesian cow for 808kg 215.5p £1741 to Michael Helliwell.  Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose run of Friesian cows topped at 797kg 207.5 £1653 for a 10 year old cow and for a 5 years old cow 760kg 215.5 £1637 and 713kg 219.5 £1565 to Jewitts and Charles Kirkpatrick x 2.   Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands sold a 5½ old Holstein cow for 819kg 199.5 £1633 to Les Fell.  Messrs Harrison, Breckney Hill sold a Holstein x cow for 821kg, 195.5p £1605 also to Les Fell.  Messrs Williamson, Barrowmoor Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 520kg 227.5 £1183 to Jewitts.

Yet another fantastic entry of 92 prime bulls forward seeing once again best quality bulls a steady trade and planest bulls selling at a great trade.

Twenty three bulls sold over £1900 to a days overall top of £2623.95 for an 882kg Linousin from M/s Neill, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh the same good company sold next best at £2446.92 for 817kg to A & D Meats, M/s Thompson, Townfoot Farm, Penrith sold 3 Limousins weighing 807,786 & 817kg to £2384.69, £2354.07 and 2348.88. M/s Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton Sold a 832kg Blonde to £2342.08

Top overall price per kilo of 305.60 went to a 766kg Limousin cross from M/s Miller, West Farm, Aspatria, M/s Logan, Humebyres, Kelso sold 741kgs to 300ppk and matching this price were M/s Thompson, Townfoot and M/s Neill Upper Nisbet Farm.

Black and White bulls were very easily sold and looked the best trade of the day. Topping this section were M/s Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie with a 764kg Holstein Friesian and receiving £1738.10 to Jewitt Meats, Spennymore, M/s Dixon, Hedley East Farm, Newcastle sold next best at £1623.60 for 720kg Friesians and the Whins Farm topped at £1632.02 for a 693kg to Bowland Foods, Preston. Holstiens to £1411 for a 680kg from M/s Grierson, Musgrave Hall, Penrith and Norwegian reds to £1402.89 for 606kgs from M/s Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo overall went to M/s Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie selling one of their Friesians weighing 628kg and achieving 246.50ppk to Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A great entry of 73 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby trade was seen to be flying throughout with lots more interest around.  The ringside ensured 26 animals sold over £2000 up to a day’s overall top of £2409.79 for a 794kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Crichton also sold 739kgs to £2272.43 to Mr Eric Hall and Messrs Brough, Old Rectory sold 651kgs to £2132.03 to R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Messrs Brough also sold 695kg to £2123.23 to Steven Wilson, Butchers Shops at Corby Hill and Brampton.  Simmental crosses at 719kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie sold to £1980.85.  Fleckviehs to £1823.99 for 687kg from Messrs Morton, Church Farm, Penrith and Charolais crosses to £1805.99 for a 603kg 14 month old heifer from Messrs Fisher, Merrick Farm, Stranraer.  Top overall pence per kilo on the day came from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory at 327.5p for their 651kg Limousin cross purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers.  Next best was James Crichtons, 631kg Limousin cross at 323.5p purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers and finally at 322.6p was a 460kg Limousin cross from  Messrs Sisson, Kelbarrow, Penrith purchased by Morgan Helliwell,

Steers sold to a day’s top of £2299.68 for a 773 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm, Cockermouth sold 868kgs to £2278.50 to Eric Hall.   Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton sold best Blonde cross to £2229.88 for 856kgs and purchased by Mr Alan Jarvis.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to £2218.59 for 731kg and purchased by Pioneer Foods and Aberdeen Angus crosses to £2136.05 and 718kgs from Messrs Clanachan, McCheyston, Dumfries.  Top pence per kilo steer came from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, selling a 663kg British Blue cross at 307.5p.  Messrs Studholme Nealhouse, Carlisle sold next best at 306.5p for 721kgs to A & D Meats.

Prime Sheep:

On Monday 1^st July 2024 H&H held their monthly sale of prime and cast sheep, which saw an incredible entry of 3012 head, double the number of last years sale. Over 1000 ewes sold again this week that were subject to a fantastic trade, averaging £148.33. Top this week was £285 paid for Texel ewes from M/s Fisher, Merrick Farm, Stranraer. Suffolks sold to £225 for heavy ewes, this was from Mrs Trafford, Bassenthwaite.

Horned ewes sold to £170 a head for Whitefaced Woodlands for M/s Barker & Bland, Dalefoot with tups to £240 for blue Texels from M/s Leonard, Pettigo Road. A great entry of 2000 prime sheep this week saw trade take a dip on the week saw an overall average of 321p sees Borderwway 10p up ahead of the closest markets today.

Top per head at £230 for Texel cross lambs for M/s Musgrave, Cardew Hall who sold others to £5 per kilo       with the 53 from this, averaging £181.02.

Better lambs sold £225 and 512p per kilo from M/s Trafford, Bassenthwaite which topped per kilo with the run of 32 from this home selling to average £196.03 per head.
