Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly Sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 2684 sheep were forward consisting of 1,219 spring lambs, 431 prime hoggs and 1034 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £205 and 436.2p/kg where the overall champion pen of ‘High Fives’, five Texel cross lambs which weighed 47kg and were consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm.

Our pre sale Show was sponsored by WE Jamesons and judged by local David Morland who awarded the reserve champion pen of five to the first placed Beltex cross lambs which weighed 42kg and £182 (433.3p/kg) also from Terrys Farm.

The Sowerby Family taking the hat-trick taking the top spot in three out of the four classes for the ‘High Fives’ with this home also sold the second placed pen of five Beltex cross lambs weighing 41kg which made £178 and topped the Beltex section at 434.1p/kg.

A pen of six 43kg Beltex cross lambs sold to make £180 from JoJo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York with this home also selling 41kg lambs to make £178 (423.8p/kg) and 45kg Blue Texel cross lambs to make £185.

Charlotte and Georgia Davies, Top Field Farm, Leicestershire sold a pen of five 40kg lambs to make £170 (425p/kg).

Messrs Pickard, Cheney House Farm, Queniborough sold a pen of twelve 41kg lambs to make £172 (419.5p/kg) with another pen of eleven 40kg making £166.50 (416.3p/kg) and a pen of twenty 40kg making £161 also from this home.

Suffolk cross lambs sold to £184 for a 54kg lamb from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm which was bought by Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

With Suffolk cross lambs also topping at 342p/kg for a pen of five weighing 50kg making £171 also from Terrys Farm.

Todd Farming, Market Rasen sold a pen of twenty two 49kg Suffolk cross lambs to make £160 (326.5p/kg).

Mule lambs topped at £150 for 50kg lambs from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby.

An overall sale average of 324.5p/kg was achieved which bucked the national trend of a downturn in trade, with Kirkby averaging 30-50p dearer than other outlets on the same day.

Prime Hoggs

Prime Hoggs topped at £160 for Texel cross hoggs from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm, Ousby.

Blackfaced hoggs topped at £140 for a pen of thirteen also from Messrs Mark, Sunny Gill Farm.

Cast Sheep

Cast Sheep topped at £275 for a Beltex cross ewe from Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge, Soulby.

Charlotte and Georgia Davies, Leicestershire sold a pen of five Beltex cross ewes to make £247.

Texel cross sold to £245 for a pair from Craig Douglas, Wetheriggs Farm, Penrith. With this same home also topping  the Suffolk ewes at £210.

Blue Texel cross ewes sold to £215 from JoJo Andrews, York.

Swaledale ewes topped at £125 for a pen of four from Messrs Luck, Milestone House, Barnard Castle.

Another flying trade for all classes of cast sheep was achieved and many more could have easily been sold to advantage!
