CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Numbers go up to 291 cast cows and stock bulls with many new vendors coming to take advantage of Borderway’s flying trade.

Leo Sawrij’s run of cows topped at 814kg, 267.5p, £2177 for a Charolais, and 660kg, 263.5p, £1739 and 789kg, 241.5p, £1905 for British Blues purchased by Owain Llyr twice and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of Limousin cows topped at 931kg, 233.5p, £2173 and 968kg, 223.5p, £2163 and 781kg, 243.5p, £1901 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick twice and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor cows topped at 576kg 285.5p, £1644 and 780kg, 255.5p, £1992 for Limousins purchased by Les Fell and Owain Llyr. Messrs Gate, Brackendene sold a Charolais cow for 943kg, 227.5p, £2145 to Michael Helliwell. DA Harrison & Co’s run of outstanding cows topped at 797kg, 257.5p, £2026 for a Limousin cross and 773kg, 243.5p, £1882 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Airey, The Close, sold Angus cows for 837kg, 241.5p, £2021 and 746kg, 249.5p, £1861 bought by Michael Helliwell and Owain Llyr. Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns Farm sold a British Blue cow for 737kg, 259.5p, £1912 to Owain Llyr.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand.

Messrs Todd, Wyndham House first time selling at Borderway, sold 7 Montbeliarde and a Friesian cow to average 711.43kg, 200.64p, £1427 which topped at 940kg, 207.5p, £1743 and 737kg 207.5p, £1529 both purchased by Scotbeef. Bluestone Farming’s run of Fleckvieh cows topped at 878kg, 189.5p, £1663 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Morley, Hadderdale sold a Holstein heifer for 691kg, 235.5p, £1627 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Rome, Fauldie sold the top priced Friesian cow for 886kg, 181.5p, £1608 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Horsley, Woodhouses sold Holstein Friesian heifers for 731kg, 217.5p, £1589 to Les Fell. Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock House sold a Holstein Friesian cow for 814kg, 193.5p, £1575 to Les Fell. Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall sold a Holstein Friesian cow for 791kg, 195.5p, £1546 to Michael Helliwell. DA Harrison & Co sold a run of three Limousin stock bulls for 1126kg, 233.5p, £2629 and 958kg, 227.5p, £2179 and 895kg, 227.5p, £2036 all bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thornton, Rougholm Farm sold a Charolais stock bull for 1108kg, 205.5p, £2276 and a Limousin for 928kg, 237.5, £2204 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Duff & Sons, The Laythes sold a Charolais stock bull for 962kg, 213.5p, £2013 to Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein stock bull for 1296kg, 165.5p, £2144 to Pickstocks.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 72 prime bulls forward at this week’s prime stock sale. Once again trade looked good on the whole with very best quality and heaviest bulls a flyer as were plainest bulls, in-between remain a good steady trade.

A top overall of £3000.79 went to a 1066kg Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick. Haddington Farms, Morpeth sold 928kg to £2853.60. Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor, Berwick sold 860kg to £2704.70 and Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill, Wigton had 841kg to £2586.08. Simmentals to £2517.13 for 1078kgs from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie. A 720kg Charolais cross to £1998 for Leo Sawrij, Penrith. Six bulls sold over £3.00 per kilo to a days top of 314.5ppk for a 860kg Limousin from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor and Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold a further two to 312.5p for 759kg and 310.5p for 768kg purchased by Bowland Foods.

Dairy breed bulls sold to £1720.29 for a 802kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown. Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold 713kg to £1629.21. Swedish Reds to £1696.37 for 759kg from South Lambhill and Friesians to £1541.10 for 660kg from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton. Top pence per kilo of 246.5p went to Seymour Farms, Wigton with a 541kg Montbeliarde. Holstein Friesians to 235.5p from Smallthwaite Farm, Penrith for 624 kg and to 232.5p for another from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat.

PRIME CATTLE: Another great entry of 52 prime steers & heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale of primestock saw clean cattle a flying trade throughout seeing 18 cattle sell over £2000, twelve over £2100 and five over £2200 to a top of £2400 for 768kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats. The same vendor had the day’s next best at £2315.69 for 758kg. Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria to £2279.15 for 790kgs to Mr Eric Hall. British Blue crosses to £2234.59 for 722kg from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie and Aberdeen Angus out of the Holstein to £2033.65 from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie. Messrs Hall, Prior Hall, Wigton sold a pure Holstien Friesian to £1833.53. Top pence per kilo of 315.50 went to a 613kg Limousin cross from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton purchased by Mutch Meats. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake to 312.50 for 768kg.

Heifers sold to a day’s top of £2168.78 for a 729kg Limousin from Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith to £2166.70 for a 33-month-old, 729kg Limousin cross and Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm, Carlisle returned to the live ring selling two heifers to £2121.48 for 664kg and £2103.30 for 684kg purchased by A & D Meats & Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Miller, West Farn, Aspatria sold a British Blue cross to £2080.46 for 681kgs to Bowland Foods, Preston and Messrs Brough, Old Rectory to £2010.19 for 658kg to R & JP Mullholland, Great Orton. Top overall price per kilo of 321.5p and 539kg went to Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle selling  to Bowland Foods. Cumdivock Farm sold 664kg to 319.5p and Messrs Maw Wintersheilds Farm, Bewcastle to 314.5p for 563kgs.

PRIME LAMBS: On Monday 8^th July, Harrison & Hetherington sold 1788 ewes & spring lambs in Borderway Mart. A total of 1372 lambs went to average 324.52ppk up £4 on the week. A better commercial show was forward with top price coming from Peter Urwin, Hill House, selling a 42kg Beltex to £206 (490.50ppk). An overall sale average of £141.51 was achieved leaving vendors pleased with the day’s trading despite other centres dropping off last week. Heavy lambs met a spirited trade with Jim Reid, Bengall, selling 48kg Texels to £176. His run of 82 averaged 45kg & £150.43. Messrs Story also went to sell 51kg Texel to £181. Ethan Graham, White Moss, sold some smart 39kg lambs to £144. Another great trade was had as ever, more numbers needed to satisfy an ever-growing demand.
