CAST COWS

Once again a great show of 278 cast cows were forward with many new vendors taking advantage of Borderway’s flying trade every week. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, sold the top priced Limousin cow for 751kg 285p, £2129 and 631kg, 245p, £1549 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Clark, West Glengyre Farm, sold the top priced Charolais cow for 827kg, 249.5p, £2063, also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Beattie, Ratlinggate Farm’s run of Limousin cross cows topped at 862kg, 235.5p at £2030 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine-Anjou cow for 743kg, 263.5p, £1957 to Owain Llyr.
Messrs Edmondson, High Mansrill, sold the top priced Simmental cow for 795kg 229.5, £1824, to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales, sold Limousin cows for 740kg 243.5p £1801 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Barr, Meikle Kirkland, sold Limousin cross cows for 623kg, 243.5p, £1517 and 690kg 241.5p £1666 both to Owain Llyr.
All classes of dairy cast cows were flying on this week.
Messrs Smithson, Skellies Hall sold Holstein cross cows for 918kg, 203.5p, £1868 and 796kg 207.5p £1651, both purchased by Scotbeef. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm, sold a run of Holstein cross cows topping at 824kg, 201.5p, £1660, also to Scotbeef. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall, had a run of Holstein cross cows, topping at 779kg, 211.5p, £1647 to Michael Helliwell.

Six stock bulls forward topped at 983kg 219.5p, £2157 for a Limousin stock bull from Messrs Nixon & Sons, Langlea, Wark and sold to Owain Llyr.

PRIME STEERS & HEIFERS
A much smaller show of only 46 primer steers and heifers forward whereby many more could have been sold to vendors advantage, as trade sees a rise on the week once again. Twenty four cattle sold over £2000, seventeen over £2100 and nine over £2200 to a days overall top of £2403.72 for a marvellous 742kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Kirklinton, purchased by A & D Meats. Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries, sold 803kg to £2292.53 and Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, sold 823kg to £2292.06. An Aberdeen Angus cross weighing 800kgs sold to £2156 from Cleughbrae Farm, Dumfries and a 708kg British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle, to £2092.14 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Top price per kilo overall at 311.5p went to a 635kg Limousin cross from Messrs Muir, Cleughbrae, Dumfries, purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Airey, The Close, sold 636kg to 309.5p and Messrs Cope, Kirkland Guards, Wigton, to 307.5p for 706kg.
Heifers sold to a top of £2182.80 for a 724kg Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Next best at £2171.09 went to a 713kg Limousin cross from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers shop, Great Orton, Carlisle, this heifer was also top price per kilo Limousin cross at 304.5p.
Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie, sold top overall heifer at 305.5p for a 634kg Maine-Anjou selling to A & D Meats.

PRIME BULLS

The largest entry of bulls seen for a while with 124 forward att the weekly primestock sale. Trade on the whole would look marginally sharper for better fleshed and shaped bulls this week, while plainer bulls were a fraction easier. Achieving the two top prices of the day were Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire, with a 743kg Limousin, selling to £2411.04 and a Simmental cross to £2409.75 for 850kgs, both to A & D Meats.
messrs Quine, Ballakilley Farm, Isle of Man sold 849kg Limousin to £2330.51 and a 846kg Charolais to £2195.37.
Aberdeen Angus sold to £2027.96 for Evening Hill Farm, Carlisle. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown, Longtown sold a first cross British Blue out of a Holstein to £1804.98 for 685kg. Top overall pence per kilo of 324.5p went to the aforementioned Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, with next best a 691kg Limousin from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan at 314.5p .

Best dairy bred bulls went to a Fleckveih from Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, Annan, with 640kg selling to £1628.80, Montbeliardes to £1606.11 for 682kg from Warwick Farms, South Cairn, Stranraer and Holsteins to £1517.99 for 711kgs from Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall, Biggar. Top pence per kilo of 258.5p went to Messrs Henderson, East Bowhill, with a 598kg Fleckvieh, while 613kg Holstein Friesian sold to 243.5p for 613kg from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle and finally Friesians to 234.5p for 629kg from Messrs Bland, Flatt, Brampton.

CAST EWES

On Monday 15th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep, numbers were forward in larger quantities across the board this week. 1100 cast sheep met a good trade throughout , well meated heavy type ewes were well bid for, the leaner plainer types, in particular the hill breeds would be slightly less than seen of late. The top this week was £240 paid for Beltex ewes from Hargill House.

PRIME LAMBS

Prime lambs were a great trade for all weights, breeds and types selling to average 323p/kg , 2 exceptional Beltex x lambs from Messrs Trafford , Bassenthwaite Hall, sold to top the sale at £225 and £220 one of which topped per kilo at 512p selling to Bowland Foods Ltd and Yorkshire Halal Ltd respectively . Heavy lambs were very much the order of the day, however lightweight lambs sold to expectional rates with £120 regularly surpassed  for 35/36kg lambs. More needed next week to satisfy the demand of our large ringside of vibrant purchasers.
