CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: Once again a great entry of 292 Cast Cows and Stock Bulls were forward with trade being good through out.
Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses sold the top priced Charolais cow for 1091kg, 225.5p and £2460, bought by Pickstocks. Also from the same home a Saler cow sold for 835kg, 215.5p, £1838 to Jewitts. Messrs Kirk, Hall of Drumpark, sold a Charolais cow for 851kg, 217.5p and £1850 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm, sold the top priced Simmental cow for 800kg, 255.5p and £1632, also to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Slaven and Sons, Foregirth sold a Charolais cow for 639kg, 255.5p and £1632, also to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Richard, Whitehead Braw, sold a run of Limousin cows topped at 726kg, 247.5p, £1796 and 664kg 239.5p, £1590, and 701kg 235.5p, £1650 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick (x2) and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Oliver, Cawfield, sold a Limousin cross cow for 588kg, 243.5p, £1431 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh’s run of Limousin cross cows topped at 746kg. 241.5p, £1801 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Carlyle, Bleaberry Rigg, sold a Holstein cross cow for 865kg, 185.5p, £1604 to Les Fell. Messrs Haston and Son, Swordwellrigg Farm, sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross heifer for 703kg, 227.5p, £1599. Messrs Little and Son, Kirkbride House, sold Holstein cross heifers for 624kg, 231.5p, £1444 and 507kg, 221.5p, bought by Mogan Helliwell and Alan Jarvis. Top overall was a 769kg British Blue cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria receiving £2442.58 selling to A & D Meats. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie sold 839kgs Limousin to £2412.13. Messrs Bell, Winterhope, Lockerbie sold a 722kg Maine Anjou crossbred to £2133.51, a pure-bred Belted Galloway from Messrs Sloan, Burnfoot, Lander weighing 771kg achieved £1800.29. Top overall pence per kilo came from the top overall pounds per head bull from West Farm, Aspatria achieving 317.5 ppk. Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow, Wigton sold 683kg Limousin to 300.5p. Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Penrith and Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat both sold 685kg and 653kg bulls to 299.50p.
Top overall dairy bred bull was a 690kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton receiving £1507.65 for 690kg and £1505.49 for 642kgs from the same home. PRIME CATTLE: A fantastic entry of 82 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly Primestock sale whereby the numbers certainly didn’t frighten the buyers as all classes were a joy to sell. For the second week running the sale averaged over £2000 to level out at a whopping £2000.76.
Once again more new and returning customers forward to experience this great trade. Eight cattle sold over £2200 and 18 over £2100. Top overall on the day was a 734kg Limousin cross heifer from weekly vendors Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith selling to £2279.07 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont sold next best with 723kg achieving £2216 and Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton selling 748kgs to £2128 to Eric Hall. Best British Blue cross heifer came from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths at £1808.30. Top overall pence per kilo of 324.5p went to a 601kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton purchased by Frasers Butchers Shop, High Street, Stranraer. Messrs Miller averaged a healthy 310pph for his run of 6. Messrs Craik, Waterside, Castle Douglas sold a 606kg Limousin cross to 317.5p and Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold 598kgs at 315.5p to A & D Meats.
Steers sold equally well and sold to a days top of £2262.89 for a 771kg Limousin cross from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria and purchased by Pioneer Foods and the same home also sold next best at £2262.44 for 743kgs. Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton to £2257.02 and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake to £2248.97 for 729kgs. Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton sold best British Blue cross to £2213.75 and next best at £2174.85 as well for Arkleby Hall. Top overall pence per kilo of 308.50 went to a 729kg Limousin cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake equating to £2248.97. Next best was Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie selling 707kgs at 306.5p

PRIME LAMBS : On Monday 22nd July 2024 H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep which saw an increased entry across the board of 3112 head, which was spread across a fabulous 130 vendors who made the trip to Borderway , starting with the cast ewes, all types sold to increased rates on the week , with strong bidding on all lots , top today was £280 for a pair of pure texel ewes from Christian Wilson, Derryhannagh with an overall sale average of £130 being achieved, Beltex sold to £235 ,Suffolks sold to £215 and hill ewes sold to £154 with horned types to £120 for Swaledales.
Just shy of 2000 prime lambs this week sold to similar returns on the week with an overall average of 319ppkg achieved, top this week was £210 for a fantastic single lamb from Joe and Julia Wilson, Meadow Farm, Camerton which sold to Bowland Foods Ltd, the same purchasers also paid the top price per kilo of 500p for 41kg lambs from Messrs Musgrave , Cardew Hall (41kg £205).
All classes were great to sell with weight once again the order of the day, more required next week in the UKs most talked about and fastest growing Sheep Market
