On Monday 8th March Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again, a good show of 360 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1756 prime sheep were on offer on Monday.

PRIME BULLS: One of the fleshiest shows of bulls seen for long enough with a trade to match! Over 80 prime bulls offered in front of the usual ringside of buyers saw a fantastic trade throughout for all types. Top overall was local farmers Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside, Lockerbie with their Limousin achieving £2122. Messrs Connell, Wanton Walls, Lauder sold another to £2117.92 both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning , Keswick peaked at £2063 purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Charolais crosses sold to £1663 from Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank, Wigton purchased by Messrs Medcalf of Brookwood Abattoir. Salers sold to £1519 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top overall pence per kilo of 239.5p was received by Messrs Dent, Beamwham, Hexham and purchased by Ralph Pearson. Dairy bred bulls sold exceptionally well with a day’s top of £1270 for a Fleckvieh from Seymour Farms, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Friesians sold to a top of £1235 from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 198.5p was attained by Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle with a Friesian purchased by Jewitt Meats. PRIME CATTLE: A marvellous trade for the 48 prime steers and heifers on offer whereby many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage. £1722 and £1719 were the top overall prices per head and this was paid to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle for their Limousin crosses both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie sold another to £1701 and was purchased by Messrs Fairlie, Letham. Top pence per kilo of 239.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and purchased by Alan Jarvis. Messrs Hewitson, Lords Close, Maryport sold another to 237.5p purchased by Messrs Fairlie as did Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow. Heifers also saw an outstanding trade with a day’s top of £1589(x2) for Limousin crosses from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods and Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Blonde crosses sold to £1464 from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods and British Blues sold to £1361 from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo of 275.5p and 255.5p also came from Messrs Little and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth sold another to 252.5p and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill, Carlisle. British Blue crosses from Greenhill Farm, Wigton peaked at 255.5p purchased by Owain Llyr and Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton to 239.5p purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great show of 248 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to one of the dearest trades to date. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm’s run of cows topped at 854kg at 194.5p totalling £1661 for a British Blue x cow bought by Owain Llyr, a Limousin x cow sold for 883kg at 184.5p totalling £1629 to Charles Kirkpatrick, another British Blue x cow for 751kg at 203.5p totalling £1528 to Owain Llyr and a Limousin x for 804kg at 185.5p totalling £1491 to Jewitts Meats. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top price Simmental cow for 946kg at 155.5p totalling £1471 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Steel, Steeley Farm sold the top priced Blonde cow for 721kg at 203.5p totalling £1467 to Owain Llyr. Mr Andrew Jefferson, Aspatria Hall sold the top priced Charolais cow for 867kg at 168.5p totalling £1460 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold the top priced Parthenais cow for 752kg at 182.5p totalling £1372 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Carruthers, Silloans sold a Limousin x heifer for 599kg at 227.5p totalling £1362 to Sean McGimpsey.

All classes of dairy cast cows were in great demand. Messrs Workman, Beeches sold Montbeliarde x cows for 878kg at 149.5p totalling £1312, 838kg at 151.5p totalling £1269, 789kg at 157.5p totalling £1242, 671kg at 183.5p totalling £1231 and 613kg at 196.5p totalling £1204 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick(x2), Dovecote Park, Les Fell and Capper Farming.  Messrs Wilson, Wood Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 719kg at 173.5p totalling £1247. Messrs Holliday, High Bow sold a Holstein x cow for 739kg at 168.5p totalling £1245 to Les Fell. Messrs Robson, Gelt House sold a Montbeliarde x cow for 792kga t 156.5p totalling £1239 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Graves, Old Church Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 894kgat 138.5p totalling £1238 to Dovecote Park. Mr Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse Dairy sold the top priced Fleckvieh x cow for 899kg at 133.5p totalling £1200 to Sean McGimpsey.

CAST BULLS: A larger show of 8 stock bulls was on offer with trade sharper throughout. Messrs Connell, Wanton Walls sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1100kg at 138.5p totalling £1523 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jack Lamb, Ingleston sold a Shorthorn bull for 1243kg at 199.5p totalling £1485 to Pickstocks. Messrs Spark & Son, Little Swinburne sold a Limousin stock bull for 852kg at 152.5p totalling £1299 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Hall sold a Stabiliser bull for 874kg at 148.5p totalling £1297 to Jewitt Meats.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday H&H held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep where 1756 head were forward. A drop in numbers on the week saw prices lift again to average an amazing £134.06 per head or 296ppk. Top price of the day was £176 paid for heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Ivegill. Topping per kilo was Messrs Little, The Hollands, Penton who sold 39kg Beltex hoggs at 403ppk (£157 per head). Suffolk hoggs averaged £139.63 and sold to £164 for heavies from Messrs Borthwick, Catlins, Lockerbie and to 301.1p from Messrs Bendle, The Nook, Scaleby. Hill hoggs averaged £127.88 and peaked at £143 for Blackies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 307p again for Blackies from Smalmstown whose run of 265 averaged £133.80 (297ppk). Mules averaged £134.65 and sold to £144(x2) from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell and Messrs Fell, Harley Croft with a top of 295ppk from Messrs Armstrong, Shank Field Head.

CAST SHEEP: A smaller show on offer but demand far higher on the week. Topping today’s sale at £140 was a Texel from Messrs Carr, Millhill Farm. Closely followed by two from Kallum Hunt at £139. Mules sold with ease this week to £100 from Messrs Stainton. Cheviots sold to £98 from Messrs McGarva, Horseclose. Many more ewes could be sold with ease.
